Elements and Performance Criteria

1. Research sculptural ideas and techniques
   • Support professional practice by expanding knowledge of historical and contemporary sculpture
   • Research ways that other artists have used different sculptural techniques
   • Investigate how particular sculptural techniques work to achieve different technical effects
   • Evaluate the relationships between sculptural techniques and ideas
   • Adapt and use relevant ideas and approaches and comply with intellectual property requirements
2. Select sculptural techniques for refinement
   • Evaluate creative and professional opportunities offered by different sculptural techniques
   • Identify and assess limitations and constraints of particular techniques
   • Select a broad range of sculptural techniques for refinement
3. Determine safety requirements for sculptural work
   • Investigate safety issues associated with sculptural work
   • Set up work space, equipment, tools and materials according to safety requirements
   • Establish and follow safe work practices
   • Monitor key safety issues during production of the work
4. Consolidate sculptural technique to professional level
   • Develop increasing confidence and skill through practice and experimentation
   • Proactively identify and resolve technical problems in sculptural projects based on developing expertise
   • Challenge and test ideas and use creative thinking techniques to encourage new and unpredictable ideas to emerge
   • Evolve ideas and other professional skills through ongoing experimentation with technique

5. Evaluate own sculptural technique
   • Evaluate development of own technique with others and seek feedback
   • Seek and participate in professional discussions that challenge and explore different concepts and approaches
   • Evaluate particular ways that experimentation with different techniques has informed own artwork
   • Identify ways to further develop technique as part of professional practice and build ideas into future work

Performance Evidence

Evidence of the ability to:

research an extensive range of sculptural techniques to inform own work practice

refine sculptural technique through a process of thorough experimentation and practice to create a coherent body of sculptural work which:

shows a command of chosen techniques

demonstrates the development of own individual style

complies legislative responsibilities

review and evaluate work against objectives.

Knowledge Evidence

To complete the unit requirements safely and effectively, the individual must:

describe intellectual property considerations relevant to producing sculptural works

identify information sources that support research in sculptural practice

summarise, for historical and contemporary sculpture, the main cultural, sociological, philosophical, aesthetic, political and commercial influences

explain, for own work practice and that of other artists, the relationship between sculptural technique and particular effects and design ideas

explain, for an extensive range of sculptural techniques, how they work to achieve effects and their limitations and constraints in achieving effects

describe a range of creative thinking techniques and how they can be used to encourage new ideas

describe how the elements and principles of design may be applied and challenged when creating sculpture

explain key safety requirements for sculpture work.
