Elements and Performance Criteria

1. Clarify recording requirements
   • Discuss production documentation and requirements with relevant people to determine scope of sound recording operations
   • Plan sound recording operations according to production documentation
   • Organise script extracts for sound recordists as required
   • Visit all locations to identify problems that may arise during sound recording operations and plan accordingly
   • Prepare work plan as required, and brief relevant people accordingly
   • Check that selected sound equipment and accessories meet production requirements
2. Prepare for location recording operations
   • Confirm with relevant people that appropriate sound equipment, accessories and consumables are available and in working order prior to shoot
   • Liaise with relevant people to confirm planned recordings meet post-production requirements
   • Confirm sound equipment and accessories are rigged according to safety, technical and production requirements
3. Monitor sound recording operations on location
   • Determine optimum positioning of boom and microphone for recording dialogue and sound effects during technical run throughs and rehearsals
   • Supervise recording and advise sound recordists as required
   • Monitor quality of recorded sound and request additional recordings as required
   • Confirm sound recordings are backed up regularly to counteract equipment malfunction
4. Finalise sound recording operations
   • Confirm sound recordings, master and backup copies meet production and organisational requirements
   • Confirm equipment and accessories are de-rigged and work environment is cleaned according to safety and production requirements
   • Provide feedback to production team members as required
   • Evaluate own performance and note areas for improvement

Performance Evidence

Evidence of the ability to:

plan, coordinate and supervise sound recording operations on location for screen productions

monitor sound recording on location in line with safety and production requirements

liaise with performers, sound recordists and production team to achieve production requirements.

Note: If a specific volume or frequency is not stated, then evidence must be provided at least once.

To complete the unit requirements safely and effectively, the individual must:

explain the relevance of post-production requirements to sound recording

explain the issues and challenges that typically arise when coordinating sound recording operations on location, and how to address them

outline the safety considerations that relate to the supervision of sound recording on location.
