Elements and Performance Criteria

1. Prepare to write material
   • In consultation with relevant personnel, confirm type of written material required
   • Identify factors that may affect the writing assignment and plan accordingly
   • Determine style or tone appropriate to the target publication
   • Discuss plans or preliminary ideas with relevant personnel as required
   • Take account of copyright and issues that could lead to legal action when planning writing assignments
2. Research topic
   • Use appropriate information sources to gather background material
   • Conduct interviews to gather information as required
   • Review information gathered to determine the best approach to writing assignments
   • Discuss results of research, ideas and proposed approach with relevant personnel as required
3. Write material
   • Ensure that language and writing style are suited to the target audience and publication
   • Ensure that specialised vocabulary is appropriate to the context of brief and subject matter
   • Ensure that work is proofed and edited to required standard
4. Review written piece
   • Present a draft for review by relevant personnel
   • Adjust work as required and present final draft in the agreed manner and timeframe
   • Evaluate writing process, assessing own performance and noting areas for future improvement

Performance Evidence

Evidence of the ability to:

apply the principles of writing and communication to meet the requirements of dance writing briefs

write content for specific target audiences

demonstrate a sound knowledge of grammar, punctuation and writing styles

work collaboratively

work under pressure and meet deadlines.

Note: If a specific volume or frequency is not stated, then evidence must be provided for each of the above points at least once.

Knowledge Evidence

To complete the unit requirements the individual must:

demonstrate well-developed knowledge of the following dance-related issues:

dance styles and genres

dance form and performance conventions

repertoire as it relates to relevant dance styles or genres

cultural circumstances of dance performance

technical processes and demands of choreography or dance performances

empathy with the creative work of performers

describe issues and challenges that arise when writing about dance and live performance and suggest solutions to address them

discuss the way readers scan and read written material and the implications of this for writers

in relation to the chosen publication medium, describe key features of:

communication principles in writing

writing and presentation techniques

describe how the following apply to writers:

laws and regulations governing defamation and obscenity

copyright

work health and safety (WHS) issues in relation to working for long periods of time on computers.
