Elements and Performance Criteria

  1. Prepare for operations
  2. Collect, store and check for presence and serviceability of equipment, tools and stores required for explosive ordnance disposal operations
  3. Conduct planning prior to arrival at scene
  4. Contribute to locating and identifying explosive ordnance and associated components
  5. Determine safety and evacuation requirements
  6. Determine if the item can be blown in place or requires a render-safe operation
  7. Contribute to the conduct of disposal procedures
  8. Operate equipment in accordance with current instructions
  9. Recover, refurbish and secure equipment
  10. Conduct post explosive ordnance demolition clearance
  11. Complete and process post explosive ordnance demolition reports

Performance Evidence

Evidence required to demonstrate competence in this unit must be relevant to and satisfy all of the requirements of the elements and performance criteria on at least one occasion and includes:

applying safety template requirements

applying the theory of explosive ordnance design

applying time management

calculating and applying time and safety distance

conducting area search

conducting calculations

maintaining documentation

reading, accessing, interpreting and applying technical instructions

applying consequent mitigation principles

applying manual handling and team lifting techniques

using PPE

handling dangerous good and hazardous substances safely


Knowledge Evidence

Evidence required to demonstrate competence in this unit must be relevant to and satisfy all of the requirements of the elements and performance criteria and includes:

Operational knowledge of:

blast/fragmentation/thermal mitigation

characteristics, technical capabilities, effects and limitations of explosive ordnance to be destroyed

characteristics, technical capabilities, effects and limitations of explosive ordnance disposal store and equipment

composition of teams and roles and responsibility of team members

documentation requirements

equipment operating requirements

initiation procedures

net explosive quantity estimations

principles of team work and teams aims and objectives

relevant testing procedures

safety distance calculation procedures

site preparation and refurbishment requirements

techniques for supporting others/team members

theory of explosive ordnance design
