Elements and Performance Criteria

1. Operate lighter
   • Moor and manoeuvre lighter in accordance with organisational requirements
   • Open, close and secure hatches in accordance with work requirements and operational procedures
   • Identify and maintain load security and protection throughout the operation
   • Establish and maintain communication with tow boat operators throughout the towing operation
2. Maintain lighter
   • Conduct minor repairs and maintenance in accordance with organisational work procedures
   • Erect and pull-down bird nets in accordance with operational procedures
   • Clean lighter in accordance with safety and organisational guidelines
3. Prepare for lighter operations
   • Identify and confirm requirements to operate a lighter in accordance with organisational procedures
4. Apply work health and safety (WHS) requirements and recognise safety precautions throughout the operation
5. Inspect lighter for safe operation in accordance with organisational procedures
6. Identify, obtain and prepare equipment and stores required for operation in accordance with operational guidelines
   • Moor and manoeuvre lighter in accordance with organisational requirements
7. Open, close and secure hatches in accordance with work requirements and operational procedures
8. Identify and maintain load security and protection throughout the operation
9. Establish and maintain communication with tow boat operators throughout the towing operation
   • Conduct minor repairs and maintenance in accordance with organisational work procedures
10. Erect and pull-down bird nets in accordance with operational procedures
11. Clean lighter in accordance with safety and organisational guidelines
12. Complete housekeeping activities
    • Maintain equipment and tools in accordance with operational guidelines
13. Finalise records and documentation, as required

Performance Evidence

Evidence required to demonstrate competence in this unit must be relevant to and satisfy all of the requirements of the elements and performance criteria on at least one occasion and include: applying relevant emergency response procedures applying relevant organisational policies and procedures, including work health and safety applying relevant security and protection completing housekeeping activities conducting relevant lighter and equipment inspection, maintenance and repairs identifying, selecting and using equipment, stores and tools maintaining relevant records and documentation preparing for lighter operations undertaking operations with lighters, including: mooring and manoeuvring lighters moving and manoeuvring operating lighter operating hatches operating the lighter

Knowledge Evidence

Evidence required to demonstrate competence in this unit must be relevant to and satisfy all of the requirements of the elements and performance criteria and include knowledge of: emergency response procedures equipment inspection requirements maintenance and repair procedures mooring and manoeuvring procedures relevant documentation requirements relevant legislation, regulatory codes, organisational policies and procedures relevant lighter and equipment manufacturer specifications relevant marine orders security and protection procedures.
