Elements and Performance Criteria

  1. Prepare for testing
  2. Apply relevant work health and safety (WHS) requirements, including those contained in organisational procedures, throughout the operation
  3. Identify, acquire and prepare technical references, tools and equipment required for the tests
  4. Identify, acquire, prepare, move and position explosive ordnance or containers in preparation for the task, in accordance with operational procedures
  5. Prepare purging equipment and set required flow and pressure specifications in accordance with operational procedures
  6. Identify, calculate, assess and apply net explosive quantities and compatibility throughout the operation in accordance with organisational procedures
  7. Monitor and maintain environmental conditions in accordance with organisational procedures
  8. Conduct and monitor purging
  9. Purge explosive ordnance or container in accordance with organisational policy and procedures
  10. Apply emergency response and contingency procedures, as required
  11. Finalise purging procedures
  12. Maintain equipment/tools in accordance with organisational procedures
  13. Maintain documentation and records in accordance with statutory, organisational and workshop requirements

Performance Evidence

Evidence required to demonstrate competence in this unit must be relevant to and satisfy all of the requirements of the elements and performance criteria on at least one occasion and include:

applying relevant compatibility and environmental constraints

applying relevant legislation, statutory requirements, organisational policies, procedures and structures

calculating and applying net explosive quantity

communicating effectively orally and in writing

preparing for testing

reading, accessing, interpreting and applying technical instructions and drawings related to purging

undertaking purging activities including:

conducting and monitoring purging

finalising purging procedures

maintaining documentation

monitoring pressures

operating purging equipment


Knowledge Evidence

Evidence required to demonstrate competence in this unit must be relevant to and satisfy all of the requirements of the elements and performance criteria and include knowledge of:

assessment of compatibility

calculation of net explosive quantity

characteristics and limitations of purging equipment

effects of environmental conditions

operability and compatibility of purging equipment

organisational documentation requirements

organisational safety information sources

relevant legislation, regulatory codes, organisational safety policies, procedures and structures
