Elements and Performance Criteria

1. Prepare to take a photograph
   • Identify potential need, type and context of photographs to accompany a story.
   • Check photographic equipment for serviceability.
   • Rectify and report any equipment faults to appropriate personnel, or obtain replacement equipment, or take an alternative approach.
   • Assess and determine most appropriate way to get the photograph.
   • Seek permission to take the photograph from relevant Defence personnel.
   • Explain context of the proposed photograph to the subject to gain willing cooperation and permission.
   • Identify and factor operational, security, safety and other considerations affecting taking photographs into planning.
   • Detail and record captions.
2. Take a photograph
   • Prepare photographic equipment and select correct technical settings.
   • Brief subjects on proceedings.
   • Set up photographic sequence, compose and take the photograph.
   • Produce photographs of a high quality illustrating stories and suitable for commercial reproduction.
3. Arrange for processing of photographs
   • Retrieve images.
   • Make arrangements for photographs to be developed, scanned or otherwise made ready for publication.
4. Transmit photographs
   • Select most suitable means for transmitting photographs.
   • Forward photographs for publication.
   • Maintain record of transmission.

Performance Evidence

Evidence required to demonstrate competence must satisfy all of the requirements of the elements and performance criteria. If not otherwise specified the candidate must demonstrate evidence of performance of the following on at least one occasion.

using in-service cameras

identifying newsworthy opportunities

identifying and taking photographs in a manner, particularly in a field operation, that does not place themselves or others in danger

demonstrating an awareness of current affairs and Defence issues

Knowledge Evidence

Evidence required to demonstrate competence must satisfy all of the requirements of the elements and performance criteria. If not otherwise specified the depth of knowledge demonstrated must be appropriate to the job context of the candidate.
