Elements and Performance Criteria

1. Use communications systems and equipment
   • Select, inspect and test communication equipment appropriate to the task and report faults.
   • Set up and operate communication equipment using authorised radio telephone procedure.
   • Utilise communication systems to facilitate the transmission and reception of voice and data.
   • Acknowledge contact, confirm communication and take action as required.
   • Manage communication faults and deficiencies and utilise alternative communication strategies when required.
   • Process and record communications.
2. Maintain communications equipment
   • Apply fault finding techniques and conduct basic maintenance and routine servicing.
   • Identify faulty equipment, note for repair by completing documentation.

Performance Evidence

Evidence required to demonstrate competence must satisfy all of the requirements of the elements and performance criteria. If not otherwise specified the candidate must demonstrate evidence of performance of the following on at least one occasion.

identifying basic equipment faults

operating current radio equipment, including secure equipment

reporting communications faults and deficiencies

using radio telephone procedure, including codes

utilising communications systems

setting up and operating the current in-service, secure and insecure, communications equipment

utilising correct radio telephone procedure

maintaining communications using alternative strategies when contact is lost

Evidence required to demonstrate competence must satisfy all of the requirements of the elements and performance criteria. If not otherwise specified the depth of knowledge demonstrated must be appropriate to the job context of the candidate.
