Elements and Performance Criteria

1. Prepare and plan for operations
   • Obtain and clarify orders in accordance with commander’s intent
   • Provide assistance in planning defensive operations, in accordance with organisational procedures
   • Make planning decisions based on a logical process to solve operational problems
   • Prepare outline-plans to support sub-unit level defensive operations and present to personnel as required
2. Support sub-unit level defensive activities
   • Prepare and deliver orders in accordance with organisational procedures
   • Coordinate and integrate combat support and combat service support into operational plans
   • Assist in the execution of sub-unit defensive operations
   • Coordinate defensive routine in accordance with operational plan and orders
   • Coordinate patrol activity in accordance with operational plan and orders
   • Coordinate occupation of an echelon in a defensive position in accordance with operational plan and orders
   • Coordinate early warning and security measures in accordance with task requirements and operational procedures
3. Coordinate sub-unit administrative activities
   • Plan and execute sub-unit level battlefield clearance to meet task requirements
   • Coordinate sub-unit re-supply and maintenance in accordance with organisational procedures
   • Supervise sub-unit within an echelon in Defence in accordance with operational plan
   • Coordinate combat service support to sub-unit in accordance with organisational procedures
   • Support and foster sub-unit morale, welfare and discipline, as required, in accordance with organisational policies

Performance Evidence

Evidence required to demonstrate competence in this unit must be relevant to and satisfy all of the requirements of the elements and performance criteria on at least one occasion and include: applying relevant organisational administrative procedures applying relevant work health and safety (WHS)/occupational health and safety (OHS) requirements including: applying relevant safety precautions and procedures applying safety, legislative and statutory requirements relevant to defensive operations controlling risk identifying, interpreting and analysing risk assessment requirements relevant to defensive operations communicating effectively conducting the individual military appreciation process coordinating sub-unit administrative activities displaying initiative and leadership employing equipment and weapons tactically managing resources navigating during defensive operations preparing and planning for operations preparing reports supporting relevant sub-unit level defensive activities and leading the group when required working as part of a team.

Knowledge Evidence

Evidence required to demonstrate competence in this unit must be relevant to and satisfy all of the requirements of the elements and performance criteria and include knowledge of: basis for security operations communication and liaison requirements laws of armed conflict logical process including: defensive tactics, techniques and procedures employment of battlespace operating systems employment of weapons and equipment individual military appreciation process navigation techniques orders for opening fire orders for the use of force principles of defensive operations rules of engagement principles of leadership relevant defensive operations and military law requirements relevant defensive operations re-supply and resource management relevant legislation, and organisational policies and procedures security tactics, techniques and operational procedures.
