Elements and Performance Criteria

1. Collect epidemiologic data
   • Obtain and clarify tasks, as required
   • Provide information and assistance to personnel conducting assessment in accordance with operational procedures
   • Obtain information about disease outbreak using appropriate data collection methods
   • Collect and test data in accordance with operational procedures
2. Participate in epidemiologic assessment
   • Analyse epidemiologic data to identify factors relating to disease outbreak
   • Compare factors relating to disease outbreak to the treatment information and to the organisation’s response in accordance with relevant instructions
   • Seek expert advice or opinion from personnel with relevant expertise to aid assessment in accordance with operational procedures and relevant authority
3. Identify immediate disease control measures
   • Identify a range of control measures in accordance with environmental health support plan
   • Communicate identified control measures to personnel conducting assessment
   • Integrate disease control measures into environmental health support plan in accordance with operational procedures
   • Identify control measures outside of team’s capability and refer to relevant personnel to address

Performance Evidence

Evidence required to demonstrate competence in this unit must be relevant to and satisfy all of the requirements of the elements and performance criteria on at least two separate occasions and include: applying legislation and operational policies and procedures applying risk management principles communicating and working effectively gathering and analysing relevant information about the outbreak of disease and making accurate assessments identifying hazards, assessing risks and implementing control measures identifying possible causes of disease transmission making accurate assessments about factors of disease managing workplace issues and problems prioritising relevant tasking.

Knowledge Evidence

Evidence required to demonstrate competence in this unit must be relevant to and satisfy all of the requirements of the elements and performance criteria and include knowledge of: causes and control measures of disease transmission relevant documentation and administrative processes relevant food storage and distribution standards including: hazard analysis and critical control points (HACCP) approach to food control pathophysiology of common communicable diseases process of disease relevant legislation and operational policies and procedures risk management principles role and capabilities of other health care providers including environmental health team.
