Elements and Performance Criteria

1. Conduct a reconnaissance of a route
   • Conduct map reconnaissance of a route linking a number of points to identify potential hazards that may impact on the free flow of traffic along that route
   • Undertake route reconnaissance to identify, confirm or obtain more information on potential hazards that may impact on the free flow of traffic along that route
   • Provide verbal and/or written report on the findings of the reconnaissance to appropriate personnel, as directed
2. Control movement along a route
   • Obtain and interpret maps, overlays, reconnaissance reports, traffic control plans, movement instructions and movement plans, as required, to determine road movement information, identify traffic control tasks and identify the requirement for sign posting routes
   • Prepare and implement traffic control plan including contingency actions, as required, in accordance with organisational orders and instructions
   • Prepare, position, maintain and recover sign posting along a route in accordance with traffic control plan
   • Control traffic using a range of specialist equipment and in accordance with organisational procedures
   • Conduct speed checks, as required, in accordance with traffic control plan
   • Communicate and liaise with external agencies and traffic authorities to ensure full details of the operation are available
3. Operate a police post
   • Site and establish police post in accordance with traffic control plan and operational directives
   • Provide movement guidance and road traffic advice to authorised persons in accordance with traffic control plan

Performance Evidence

Evidence required to demonstrate competence in this unit must be relevant to and satisfy all of the requirements of the elements and performance criteria on at least one occasion and include: applying relevant legislation, regulatory standards and organisational policies and procedures conducting a reconnaissance of a route controlling movement along a route following instructions/directives and reporting relevant information identifying, interpreting and analysing requirements relevant to battlefield circulation and control operations navigating and map reading operating a police post participating as a team member performing police post duties as an individual and in a collective environment recording information using speed measuring equipment using traffic control signals writing up traffic control plan including diagrams and tables.

Knowledge Evidence

Evidence required to demonstrate competence in this unit must be relevant to and satisfy all of the requirements of the elements and performance criteria and include knowledge of: camouflage and countersurveillance of police posts map reading and navigation operation of speed measuring equipment oral and written communication techniques police post tasks potential hazards relevant to battlefield circulation and control operations relevant legislation, regulatory standards and organisational policies and procedures road and traffic hazards and traffic control measures route reconnaissance sign posting a route siting and layout of a police post specialist equipment suitable for conducting battlefield circulation and control operations team structures and roles and responsibilities of team members team work principles and strategies traffic control, traffic control tasks and traffic control movement plans written and verbal reconnaissance reports.
