Performance Evidence

Evidence required to demonstrate competence in this unit must be relevant to and satisfy all of the requirements of the elements and performance criteria on at least one occasion and include:

applying relevant industry standards, organisational policies and procedures

assisting in providing information for an inspection report

completing underwater dives

conducting an inspection task requiring angular and linear measurements on one of the following:

pier/bridge – assessment is to be constructed around the examination of an existing pier/bridge requiring some expedient reinforcement to make fit for operational use

ship’s hull – assessment is to be constructed around a sonar dome housing inspection and poker/feeler gauge surveys

developing inspection plan in accordance with relevant organisational procedure

documenting non-technical inspection report

making underwater field notes and sketches

measuring and recording underwater structure lengths, gaps, angles and holes in accordance with inspection plan

planning underwater inspection requirements

taking measurements under water.


Knowledge Evidence

Evidence required to demonstrate competence in this unit must be relevant to and satisfy all of the requirements of the elements and performance criteria and include knowledge of:

dive equipment

dive physics

dive physiology and medicine including:

heat and cold illnesses

compression illnesses

decompression illnesses

diving descent and ascent techniques

general diving safety awareness including:

diving in harbours

diving in tidal waters, currents and tides

diving on and/or near a ship’s bottom

lost/separated

entrapment/foul lines

marine animal threats

pollution/weeds

working in confined spaces

oceanography

relevant architecture of piers and bridges

relevant documentation and inspection proformas

relevant industry standards, and organisational policies and procedures

relevant mechanics requirements

relevant pier/bridge non-technical structural assessment techniques

relevant ship’s hull non-technical structural assessment techniques

underwater workplace hazards.
