Elements and Performance Criteria
- Prepare for splitting
- Applicable Occupational Health and Safety (OHS), environmental, legislative and organisational requirements relevant to conducting mobile splitting operations are identified and followed
- Work order is reviewed and checked with appropriate personnel
- Type and quantity of blocks to be split are identified and assessed for safe working conditions
- Equipment is selected appropriate to work requirements and checked for operational effectiveness in line with manufacturer's recommendations
- Splitting activities are planned in line with site procedures
- Communication with others is established and maintained in line with OHS requirements
- Split timber
- Hydraulic splitter is positioned and secured in line with site procedures
- Pre start-up checks are carried out on equipment in line with site requirements
- Vertical or horizontal splitting operations are selected and tested
- Timber blocks pre-cut to fit within the hydraulic splitter are positioned and secured
- Timber is split into sizes which suit standard fireplaces in line with site procedures
- Split timber is stacked or loaded for transportation
- Split timber that does not meet size requirements is set aside for recycling or re-use in line with site procedures
- Splitting processes and equipment faults are recorded and reported to the appropriate personnel
- Conduct operator maintenance
- Equipment lock-out procedures are followed in line with OHS legislation and site procedures
- Splitter is checked for blunt or damaged condition in line with site procedures
- Components are removed, maintained, adjusted and replaced in line with manufacturer's recommendations
- Hydraulic splitter set-up is assessed and adjusted to suit splitting conditions
- Splitter is kept clear of timber shards and debris and checked to ensure it meets relevant standards prior to use
