Performance Evidence

A person demonstrating competency in this unit must satisfy all of the elements, performance criteria and foundation skills of this unit. If a specific volume or frequency is not stated below, then evidence must be provided that the following requirements have been performed on at least one occasion:

apply edging to one or more timber panels in line with individual work orders using one or more materials from the following list:

laminated veneer

chipboard

fiberboard

medium density fiberboard

select the appropriate machine settings for:

panel size

squareness

profile

edge treatment width

alignment of the edge treatment

speed of the application

trim allowances

glue application rates (if not glue-backed).


Knowledge Evidence

A person competent in this unit must be able to demonstrate knowledge of:

environmental protection practices for forest products factory settings:

reducing water and energy use

cleaning plant, tools and equipment

disposing of, recycling and reusing timber

key features of panel products and purpose of edging

edge banding techniques:

checking the trim distances for cut off on each panel

appropriate machine settings for:

panel size

squareness

profile

edge treatment width

alignment of the edge treatment

speed of the application

trim allowances

glue application rates (if not glue-backed)

types of tools and equipment used for banding edges of panels; their purpose, features, operation and basic non-specialist repair and maintenance:

automated edge banding machines

mechanical edge banding machines

glue-backed veneer edge strip role

timber edging strips

laminate edge stripping (glue-backed or glued, on a role or in strips)

methods for assessing condition of edging mechanisms

organisational procedures specific to banding edges of panels:

workplace health and safety with particular emphasis on equipment lock out

use and maintenance of equipment

communication reporting lines.
