Performance Evidence

A person demonstrating competency in this unit must satisfy all of the elements, performance criteria and foundation skills of this unit. If a specific volume or frequency is not stated below, then evidence must be provided that the following requirements have been performed on at least one occasion:

safely and effectively operate a mechanical debarker in line with a work order

assess logs to be debarked for defects that will effect processing

work safely and communicate effectively with others in the work area

follow organisational policies and procedures for operating a mechanical debarker

carry out routine maintenance on a mechanical debarker

record and report debarker operations and maintenance activities.


Knowledge Evidence

A person competent in this unit must be able to demonstrate knowledge of:

workplace policies and procedures for operating a mechanical debarker

environmental protection requirements and safe disposal of waste

operational procedures of debarking equipment including start-up and shut-down procedures

characteristics of trees and timber defects that can cause processing problems including:

incorrect moisture content

warp

wane

curvature

shakes

insect defects

knots

resin pockets

established communication channels and protocols to maintain safety

processes for managing risks and hazards associated with debarking logs

workplace health and safety requirements and emergency evacuation procedures

procedures for recording and reporting workplace records and information.
