Elements and Performance Criteria

1. Prepare for assembly
   • Review construction plans and work order and where required clarify with appropriate personnel.
   • Identify and obtain type and quantity of material to be assembled and hardware.
   • Select appropriate tools and equipment and check for operational effectiveness in line with manufacturer's recommendations.
   • Identify and prepare set-up jigs required for construction.
2. Set up components
   • Select timber components from pre-cut material in line with cutting list.
   • Reject material with defects and dispose of in line with environmental protection practices.
   • Use equipment in line with organisational safety procedures, manufacturer’s instructions environmental protection practices.
   • Position and clamp components in jigs ready for joining with allowable faults, joins and grain in line with construction standards and grading rules.
   • Staple components to maintain temporary alignment during assembly.
3. Install assembly hardware
   • Position and install hardware on joints in line with and construction plan.
   • Nail or staple temporary bracing to product in line with construction standards.
   • Correct assembly faults.
   • Identify routine processing and equipment faults and resolve or report to appropriate personnel.
4. Prepare products for despatch and report
   • Check finished product for quality and label in line with work order.
   • Remove components from jigs and safely stack in designated location.
   • Strap, pack and label finished products ready for transportation.
   • Avoid wastage of strapping and packaging materials and maximise use of recycled materials.
   • Complete production and quality records and report in line with organisational procedures.

Performance Evidence

A person demonstrating competency in this unit must satisfy all of the elements, performance criteria and foundation skills of this unit. If a specific volume or frequency is not stated below, then evidence must be provided that the following requirements have been performed on at least one occasion:

construct products in line with an individual work order and construction plan for each. Products for construction will be one or more of the following:

pallets

crates

trellises

stairs

doors

windows

beams

strap, pack and label bundles of completed products ready for transportation.

typical component defects and how these affect ability to produce a quality finished product:

insect defects

assembly sequences

componentry and construction standards

typical assembly faults triggering correction to ensure product quality including:

incorrectly positioned joints

timber splits from nailing

incorrectly positioned hardware

storage layout and categories for stacking finished materials

types of tools and equipment used for assembling products; their purpose, features and operation:

measuring equipment

assembly jigs

nail plate presses

staple guns

nail guns

compressor or compressed air supply

marking equipment

strapping equipment

organisational procedures specific to assembling products:

workplace health and safety with particular emphasis on equipment lock out

use of equipment

communication reporting lines
