Elements and Performance Criteria
- Prepare for maintenance
- Review work order and where required check with appropriate personnel.
- Select appropriate repair, maintenance and personal protective equipment and check for operational effectiveness.
- Remove sawdoctoring tools for reconditioning from designated machinery.
- Plan maintenance process in line with work order.
- Recondition straight edge
- Follow organisational safety procedures and manufacturer’s recommendations throughout all repair and maintenance processes.
- Assess straight edge damage and wear select appropriate reconditioning method.
- Determine correct work angle for re-surfacing or removal of wear.
- Clamp straight edge at correct angle to prevent movement, vibration and slippage during the re-surfacing process.
- Inspect abrasive wheel or cutting tool, clean or change as required to suit work material removal, tolerance and surface texture requirements.
- Grind, machine or file straight edge to remove distortions and maintain edge straightness and flatness without overheating or causing distortion,
- Remove all signs of wear or damage from reference surfaces.
- Clean straight edge and debur edges.
- Dispose of distorted sawdoctoring tools in line with environmental protection practices.
- Recondition tension gauge
- Select grinder or other appropriate enterprise method for reconditioning tension gauges in line with organisational procedures.
- Set grinder to produce required radius or circle diameter for the tension gauge.
- Position tension gauge and clamp in grinder securely, ensuring cord height is central to gauge length and arc is ground square to plane of the gauge body.
- Inspect grinding wheel, and dress and change to suit work, material and required tolerance.
- Grind gauge to required accuracy and profile until all visible edge and face wear is removed.
- Select and monitor grinding speed and feed rates to avoid overheating, distortion and burn marks.
- Dispose of tension gauges distorted during the process in line with environmental protection practices.
- Record and report processing problems and equipment faults to appropriate personnel.
