Elements and Performance Criteria

1. Prepare for replacement
   • Review work order and where required check with appropriate personnel.
   • Select appropriate repair, maintenance and personal protective equipment and check for operational effectiveness.
   • Transport saws, blades and guides for replacement to designated machinery, using mechanical lifting aids as required.
   • Plan replacement process in line with work order.
2. Replace saws, blades and guides
   • Follow organisational safety procedures throughout all repair and maintenance repair processes.
   • Lock-out equipment and remove mechanical and safety components to provide access to saws or blades and guides without damaging components.
   • Store removed components temporarily in a safe location.
   • Replace blades and guides in line with manufacturer’s recommendations.
   • Replace and secure mechanical and safety components in line with manufacturer recommendations.
   • Check serviced equipment for correct alignment, position and overall free operational performance.
   • Dispose of used blades and guides in line with environmental protection practices or transfer for reconditioning.
   • Record and report processing problems and equipment faults to appropriate personnel.

A person demonstrating competency in this unit must satisfy all of the elements, performance criteria and foundation skills of this unit. If a specific volume or frequency is not stated below, then evidence must be provided that the following requirements have been performed on at least one occasion:

A person competent in this unit must be able to demonstrate knowledge of:

purpose, features and operation of tools and equipment used to remove and replace saws, blades and knives:

spanners, wrenches and sockets

mechanical lifting aids including:

block and chain

pedestrian operated crane

pulley system

methods for:

isolation of equipment

removing mechanical and safety components without damaging these

removing saws blades and knives cutters from saws and cutting equipment

installing and checking replacement saws blades and knives for correct alignment and free operation

features and names of different parts of saws, blades and knives for:

circular saws

chippers

canters

narrow and wide band saws

mechanical and safety equipment components and their positioning and tolerance specifications in relation to other components including

electrical motors

riving knives

access covers

saw guards

extraction equipment

environmental protection practices for repairing and maintaining tools and equipment in forest products factory settings:

reducing water and energy use

cleaning plant, tools and equipment

disposing of, recycling and reusing materials

organisational policies and procedures specific to replacing saws, blades and guides:

workplace health and safety with particular emphasis on equipment lock out and use of personal protective equipment

communication reporting lines

recording and reporting processing problems and equipment faults.
