Elements and Performance Criteria

1. Identify rehabilitation requirements
   • Review work order for rehabilitation and clarify requirements with appropriate personnel.
   • Prepare to work safely according to organisation and site requirements.
   • Obtain and review environmental, regulatory and legislative information relating to the rehabilitation.
   • Inspect site and identify specific rehabilitation and revegetation requirements and drainage.
2. Plan rehabilitation operations
   • Select appropriate equipment for work requirements and check for operational effectiveness and manufacturer recommendations.
   • Conduct a risk assessment and implement controls.
   • Determine sequence of rehabilitation operations to ensure that time is used efficiently and that suitable equipment is available for tasks.
   • Advise relevant personnel of impending rehabilitation and any disruptions that may occur.
   • Document the rehabilitation and revegetation according to organisational protocols
3. Implement repairs to tracks, quarries and landings
   • Operate equipment in line with manufacturer recommendations and monitor performance to ensure efficiency and safety of operations.
   • Remove and store any recoverable timber.
   • Remove and dispose of any debris according to site procedures.
   • Renovate tracks, quarries and landings according to rehabilitation plan, work order and site procedures.
   • Establish run-off and drainage channels to approximate natural drain lines.
   • Revegetate required areas, providing plants with optimal growing conditions.
   • Record and report renovation outcomes in line with site procedures.

Performance Evidence

A person demonstrating competency in this unit must satisfy all of the elements, performance criteria and foundation skills of this unit. If a specific volume or frequency is not stated below, then evidence must be provided that the following requirements have been performed on at least one occasion:

plan to safely rehabilitate tracks, quarries and landings after harvesting operations that includes inspection of:

analysing the current state of the track, quarry or landing

identifying natural water flow and water courses

checking for recoverable logs and equipment

considering the impact of harvesting or transportation.

perform rehabilitation tasks that returns the environment to its original or near to original condition

perform renovation which includes where required:

pulling out and removing construction materials

breaking up ramps and constructions

filling and ripping surfaces

breaking up and burying crushed rock, sand and other stabilising materials

spreading and compacting top soil over base materials

establish run-off and drainage channels suitable to the site

conduct revegetation with plants suited to the location

manage the problems and risks associated with performing rehabilitation tasks.

Knowledge Evidence

A person competent in this unit must be able to demonstrate knowledge of:

workplace requirements for performing the rehabilitation of tracks, quarries and landings

environmental protection requirements, including the safe disposal of waste material

problem identification and resolution strategies, and common fault finding techniques

tools and equipment used for rehabilitation of tracks, quarries and landings, their suitability for different procedures, and their safe use and maintenance

mathematical procedures for estimating and measuring tasks, time and resources, including calculating time to complete tasks

procedures for recording and reporting workplace information

water run-off patterns, soil types and erosion

WHS practices including:

manual handling, including shifting, lifting and carrying

personal protective equipment and clothing

elimination of hazardous materials and substances

plants suitable for revegetation

techniques for managing environmental risks and hazards, including:

uneven and unstable ground

overhead and underground services

excavations

hazardous materials

traffic

insects and animals

fires.
