Elements and Performance Criteria

1. Plan assessment
   • Determine required frequency and size of sample areas of assessment for particular forest area, from inventory programs, budgets and organisational guidelines.
   • Research methods to calculate wood volume and yield for the location to be assessed.
   • Select method to calculate wood volume and yield measurement with reference to the forest management plan.
   • Monitor site environmental protection measures in line with relevant legislation and regulations.
   • Document plan to assess volume and wood yield.
2. Implement plan to assess wood volume and yield
   • Negotiate schedule for the assessment with other forest personnel.
   • Coordinate people, materials and equipment for the assessment.
   • Obtain permits or licences required for the assessment.
   • Direct personnel in data collection on wood volume and yield.
   • Ensure compliance with quality, WHS and other organisational procedures throughout the assessment.
   • Review data for accuracy, record and report results.
3. Review assessment
   • Assessment procedures are reviewed for potential improvements
   • Assessment method is reviewed and diagnosed for potential improvements.
   • Assessment outcomes are reported to the appropriate personnel

A person demonstrating competency in this unit must satisfy all of the elements, performance criteria and foundation skills of this unit. If a specific volume or frequency is not stated below, then evidence must be provided that the following requirements have been performed on at least one occasion:

plan, conduct and review a wood volume yield assessment in line with regulations and organisational requirements that includes:

timber volume by class sizes

timber quality

timber damage

form and rates of growth

accurately and safely calculate wood volume and yield from a sample area

coordinate people, resources and equipment for the efficient assessment of wood volume and yield

identify methods of improvement for the assessment of wood volume and yield

accurately interpret data on assessment of wood volume and yield

record and report on the outcomes of assessment of wood volume and yield.

Knowledge Evidence

A person competent in this unit must be able to demonstrate knowledge of:

organisational policies and procedures for conducting a wood volume and yield assessment

environmental risks and hazards associated with assessing wood volume and yield

volumes and yields associated with different species that includes:

quantity (gross volume) of timber per hectare

estimated yield (net volume) of useable timber per hectare

assessment techniques and methods for measuring and calculating wood volume and yield

types of tools and equipment for conducting a wood volume and yield assessment, and procedures for their safe use and maintenance.
