Performance Evidence

A person demonstrating competency in this unit must satisfy all of the elements, performance criteria and foundation skills of this unit. If a specific volume or frequency is not stated below, then evidence must be provided that the following requirements have been performed on at least one occasion:

follow organisational policies and procedures for drying hardwood – work orders will include information regarding species colour, type, width, length, thickness, quantity, instructions for the environmental monitoring of work and procedures, environmental care requirements relevant to the work.

use moisture probes and correctly calculate moisture content

safely and efficiently use and maintain kilns and equipment for drying hardwood

dry hardwood to specified end moisture content in readiness for storage and/or processing

safely move and store dried hardwood according to site procedures

accurately record and report on drying processes.


Knowledge Evidence

A person competent in this unit must be able to demonstrate knowledge of:

environmental protection requirements and organizational procedures for the safe disposal or recycling of waste material and the cleaning of plant, tools and equipment

organisational and site policies and procedures for drying hardwood

drying techniques

kiln operations

fire safety procedures

visual assessment of materials for:

stability

spacing of strips

support to minimise warping

characteristics of hardwood which must include one or more of the following:

native timber species

imported timber species

dressed timber

in-the-rough timber

preservative treated timber

methods for the measurement of moisture content and Equilibrium Moisture Content (EMC)

storage systems and labeling processes

baffles and blankets and their applications

procedures for recording and reporting workplace information.
