Performance Evidence

A person demonstrating competency in this unit must satisfy all of the elements, performance criteria and foundation skills of this unit. If a specific volume or frequency is not stated below, then evidence must be provided that the following requirements have been performed on at least one occasion:

follow organisational policies and procedures relevant to aligning sawing production processes

align these components of sawing production systems in line with an idividual work order for each job:

sawing machines

chipper heads

canters rings

feed systems including line bars and carriages

remove and replace canter rings and chipper heads from equipment

use an individual log of previous alignment measurements, settings, adjustments and timelines

assess sawing machine and system performance against recovery percentages, product sizing and/or standard deviation and align components for improvement.


Knowledge Evidence

A person competent in this unit must be able to demonstrate knowledge of:

purpose, features and operation of:

sawing machines

chipper heads

canters rings

feed systems including line bars and carriages

purpose, features and operation of tools and equipment used to align sawing production systems

importance of aligning various parts of sawing systems:

reducing sawing deviation, vibration, and downtime

increasing production rates

improving quality of sawn finish

methods for:

assessing sawing machine and system performance against recovery percentages, product sizing and/or standard deviation

distmantling mechanical components of sawing machines

assessing performance of canter rings and chipper heads

aligning machine components to specified requirements

re-assembling sawing machines and testing operational effectiveness

organisational policies and procedures specific to aligning sawing production systems:

workplace health and safety with particular emphasis on equipment lock out and use of personal protective equipment

communication reporting lines

recording and reporting processing and equipment faults

environmental protection practices for repairing and maintaining tools and equipment in forest products factory settings:

reducing water and energy use

cleaning plant, tools and equipment

disposing of, recycling and reusing materials
