Elements and Performance Criteria

1. Plan drying procedures
   • Assess, measure and record moisture content and variations in timber.
   • Plan process cycles and develop timber drying schedule.
   • Review organisational policies and procedures for drying procedures and kiln management.
2. Control drying operations
   • Implement standard operating procedures for the kiln.
   • Oversee loading of timber according to quantities scheduled for drying.
   • Check and analyse process trends.
   • Implement modifications for optimum performance in the drying process.
   • Check and control seasoning chambers throughout the drying process.
   • Oversee transfer and storage of dried timber.
3. Complete documentation
   • Complete operating logs and seasoning records.
   • Identify areas for improvement.
   • Record and report major problems and equipment faults.

Performance Evidence

A person demonstrating competency in this unit must satisfy all of the elements, performance criteria and foundation skills of this unit. If a specific volume or frequency is not stated below, then evidence must be provided that the following requirements have been performed on at least one occasion:

assess, schedule and coordinate drying procedures for the enterprise

monitor drying operations and output, and make necessary modifications

coordinate timber drying operations for efficiency and safety

resolve problems so that production schedules are met

coordinate personnel to follow schedules for timber drying operations throughout all stages of the process.

Knowledge Evidence

A person competent in this unit must be able to demonstrate knowledge of:

kilns and their features which must include:

low temperature kilns

conventional

high temperature kilns and vacuum dryers

timber characteristics, timber moisture content and how to avoid cracking and deforming of timber in the drying process

charge sheets

the safe disposal of waste material

organisational and site policies and procedures for timber drying operations

mechanisms to ensure the efficient and effective use of energy

timber drying operation procedures

process cycles and modifications

Procedures for recording and reporting workplace information.
