Elements and Performance Criteria

1. Prepare for machining
   • Review work order and check with appropriate personnel.
   • Obtain type and quantity of material to be machined from storage location.
   • Select appropriate equipment and check for operational effectiveness in line with manufacturer's recommendations.
   • Plan material machining process in line with work order.
2. Set up machines
   • Check safety equipment, including emergency stops, gauges, guards and controls.
   • Complete machine settings and adjustments in line with job requirements and manufacturer's instructions.
   • Complete trial runs to check machine operation, accuracy and quality of finished work.
   • Accept or reject trialled material and dispose of in line with environmental protection practices.
   • Adjust machine setting as necessary.
3. Operate machines
   • Complete equipment pre start-up checks in line with organisational procedures.
   • Operate machine in line with manufacturer's instructions, safe operating procedures and environmental protection practices.
   • Monitor machine operation to ensure product quality and output.
   • Repair sub-quality items to minimise waste and recycle or discard others in line with environmental protection practices.
   • Stack material safely in designated location in line with work order requirements.
4. Complete operator maintenance
   • Follow organisational safety procedures to lock-out equipment.
   • Remove and replace fixed cutter heads in line with organisational procedures.
   • Joint straight cutters in line with organisational procedures.
   • Record and report machining outcomes, equipment faults and maintenance requirements to appropriate personnel.

Performance Evidence

A person demonstrating competency in this unit must satisfy all of the elements, performance criteria and foundation skills of this unit. If a specific volume or frequency is not stated below, then evidence must be provided that the following requirements have been performed on at least one occasion:

perform sawing, planing, drilling and sanding operations on timbers and boards from the following list, each in line with an individual work order:

native timber species

imported timber species

dressed timber

in-the-rough timber

stress and non-stress graded timber

preservative treated timber

medium density fibreboard

laminated veneer

chipboard

fibreboard and other manufactured board products

coated and/or treated timber products

beams or laminated beams

complete operator maintenance on at least one occasion for each of these types of equipment:

sawing equipment

planing equipment

drilling equipment

sanding equipment

A person competent in this unit must be able to demonstrate knowledge of:

environmental protection practices for forest products factory settings:

reducing water and energy use

cleaning of plant, tools and equipment

disposing of, recycling and reusing timber and other waste

storage layout and categories for:

raw materials

stacking finished materials

machining characteristics of timber and timber defects

cutting patterns and sequences

industry standard cross-sections and lengths

types of machining tools and equipment; their purpose, features, operation and basic non-specialist repair and maintenance:

measuring equipment

docking saws

bench saws

panel saws

bandsaws

panel planers

surface planers

drill presses

boring machines

edge sanders

profile sanders

panel sanders

stroke sanders

methods for assessing saw blade, knife, drill and sanding belt condition

organisational procedures specific to machining activities:

workplace health and safety with particular emphasis on equipment lock out

use and maintenance of equipment

communication reporting lines

recording and reporting cutting process and equipment faults.
