Elements and Performance Criteria

1. Prepare for drawing
   • Identify type of drawings to be created with computer-aided design (CAD) systems and clarify where required with appropriate personnel.
   • Select appropriate equipment and check for operational effectiveness in line with manufacturer's recommendations.
   • Plan CAD process in line with organisational procedures.
2. Create exploded assembly drawings
   • Obtain and complete drawing preparations.
   • Prepare 3-D models for all components.
   • Create perspective view of model in line with drawing specifications.
   • Explode model so all components are visible.
   • Label all individual components in line with organisational format.
   • Complete quality checks to ensure accuracy of outcomes.
   • Store drawings in line with organisational procedures.
3. Create job sheets
   • Select and complete job sheet preparations.
   • Set up job sheet template in line with organisational formats.
   • Create orthographic views and incorporate dimensions.
   • Specify sequencing of machine operations and operator requirements.
   • Prepare, review and test draft job sheets and amended as required.
   • Store job sheets in line with organisational procedures.
4. Convert drawings for CNC applications
   • Identify and check conversion requirements from CNC machine specifications.
   • Create layers and obtain additional information required for final conversion.
   • Assign drawing entities to relevant layers.
   • Convert drawings to required file type.
   • Store converted file in line with organisational procedures.
   • Record generation process and any equipment faults and report to appropriate personnel.

Performance Evidence

A person demonstrating competency in this unit must satisfy all of the elements, performance criteria and foundation skills of this unit. If a specific volume or frequency is not stated below, then evidence must be provided that the following requirements have been performed on at least one occasion:

generate and transfer complex drawings using a CAD system

generate these different types of computer-aided drawings:

3-D models

perspective - one, two and three point perspective drawings one, two and three point perspective drawings

orthographic and exploded views

plans

diagrams

charts

elevations

across the four drawings, incorporate these drawing entities:

lines

arcs

circles

text

hatch

dimensions

labels

convert each complex drawing for use in CNC machine operating centres

create a job sheet for each complex drawing

complete a basic report, for each drawing job, on drawing processes and equipment faults.

A person competent in this unit must be able to demonstrate knowledge of:

common products for which computer aided drawings are produced, their features, use and standard material sizes

ways in which computer aided drawings are applied to CNC machines

CNC specifications and sequencing of machine operations for production of common products

for the drawing software:

available drawing types

system functions and capabilities

methods to input and amend design factors and other data

methods to:

prepare 3-D models

prepare perspective view

prepare othograpghic view and incorporate dimensions

explode models

label components

convert drawings for CNC applications

store and retrieve drawings and job sheets

formats for and inclusions of job sheets

organisational procedures specific to producing drawings and documents using computers:
