Elements and Performance Criteria

Performance Evidence

A person demonstrating competency in this unit must satisfy all of the elements, performance criteria and foundation skills of this unit. If a specific volume or frequency is not stated below, then evidence must be provided that the following requirements have been performed on at least one occasion:

surface treat raw boards in line with individual work orders for each job; types of board to treat includes:

medium density fibreboard

core for laminated veneer

chipboard

fibreboard

plywood

at the completion of each of the above jobs:

shut-down and clean equipment in line with organisational safety procedures

dispose of excess chemicals in line with environmental protection practices

safely store unused chemicals

stack finished boards in storage location according to common size, thickness, length and surface treatment.


Knowledge Evidence

A person competent in this unit must be able to demonstrate knowledge of:

environmental protection practices for surface treating raw boards:

reducing water and energy use

cleaning plant, tools and equipment

disposing of, recycling and reusing timber

disposing of hazardous substances

storage layout and categories for:

raw materials

stacking finished boards

characteristics of timber panels and the effects of chemical treatment including:

medium density fibreboard

core for laminated veneer

chipboard

fibreboard

plywood

properties, at a basic level of understanding, of chemicals used for surface treating raw boards and their purpose

methods used to safely store chemicals

typical work flow processes for surface treating raw boards

purpose, features, operation, shut down and cleaning of compressor driven spray boom equipment

range of appropriate chemical flow rates to avoid equipment blockages and optimise quality and quantity of production output

organisational procedures specific to surface treating raw boards:

workplace health and safety with particular emphasis on equipment lock out, use of personal protective equipment and handling hazardous substances

communication reporting lines

recording and reporting production outcomes and equipment faults.
