Elements and Performance Criteria

1. Prepare for repair
   • Review work order and where required check with appropriate personnel.
   • Select appropriate repair and personal protective equipment and check for operational effectiveness.
   • Obtain type and quantity of material to be repaired from veneer or plywood production process.
   • Select filler appropriate to work order.
2. Fill material
   • Follow organisational safety procedures throughout all repair processes.
   • Mix filler in line with manufacturer's instructions or obtain required quantity of pre-mixed filler.
   • Inspect veneer, panel or plywood for splits, voids and splintered or missing edges and mark for filling.
   • Apply filler to voids and allow to dry for sanding.
   • Apply mending tape to splits to retain veneer integrity.
3. Redistribute material
   • Regrade repaired veneer, panel and plywood in line with organisational procedures and industry standards.
   • Direct material to storage or processing operations in line with organisational procedures.
   • Dispose of irreparable material and excess filler in line with environmental protection practices.
   • Clean work area and store unused filler in line with organisational safety procedures.
   • Record and report production outcomes to appropriate personnel.

Performance Evidence

A person demonstrating competency in this unit must satisfy all of the elements, performance criteria and foundation skills of this unit. If a specific volume or frequency is not stated below, then evidence must be provided that the following requirements have been performed on at least one occasion:

complete repairs in line with individual work orders for the following types of material:

single thickness veneer

panel products

manufactured plywood

select and use the appropriate filler to complete repairs

complete repairs for the following types of defects:

splits

voids

splintered and missing edges

for each of the above jobs, visually inspect materials and re-classify their quality and use after repair.

safely store fillers

key features of and applicable terminology for industry standard grades for re-classifying quality of repaired veneer, panel and plywood

organisational procedures specific to repairing veneer and ply:

workplace health and safety with particular emphasis on use of personal protective equipment and handling hazardous substances

communication reporting lines

recording and reporting production outcomes.
