Elements and Performance Criteria

Performance Evidence

A person demonstrating competency in this unit must satisfy all of the elements, performance criteria and foundation skills of this unit. If a specific volume or frequency is not stated below, then evidence must be provided that the following requirements have been performed on at least one occasion:

produce profiled panels for the following types of material in line with individual work orders that prescribe different profiles and number of panels for each job:

medium density fibreboard

laminated veneer

chipboard

fibreboard

complete profiling of product chosen from the following list:

quad

beading

mouldings

shaped beams

architraves

skirting boards

scotia

for each of the above jobs, stack batches of profiled panels in storage location according to common profile type and dimension

after each of the above jobs, complete operator maintenance on the profiling equipment used.


Knowledge Evidence

A person competent in this unit must be able to demonstrate knowledge of:

environmental protection practices for forest products factory settings:

reducing water and energy use

cleaning plant, tools and equipment

disposing of, recycling and reusing timber and other waste

storage layout and categories for:

raw materials

stacking finished panels

typical timber panel defects and how they affect ability to produce quality profiled product:

warp

wane

cupping

holes

breakages

lifting veneer

bonding problems

common profiles and applicable terminology

common cutting patterns, sequences and appropriate feed rates used to achieve common profiles

purpose, features and operation of equipment used to cut panels to profile:

measuring equipment

multi-head planing machines (four siders)

spindle moulders

routing machines

shaping machines

machine guides

methods for assessing cutting blade condition and completing and basic non-specialist repair and maintenance for profiling equipment

organisational procedures specific to cutting panels to profile:

workplace health and safety with particular emphasis on equipment lock out and use of personal protective equipment

communication reporting lines

recording and reporting production outcomes, equipment faults and maintenance requirements.
