Elements and Performance Criteria

Performance Evidence

A person demonstrating competency in this unit must satisfy all of the elements, performance criteria and foundation skills of this unit. If a specific volume or frequency is not stated below, then evidence must be provided that the following requirements have been performed on at least one occasion:

complete maintenance jobs in line with individual work orders

for each of the above jobs complete the following maintenance and repair activities:

process caul plates and screens through the full cleaning cycle which may be via chemical or heat treatment baths

polish caul plates to ensure optimum operation

inspect caul plates, screen and transport plates for defects and process for repair or dispose of.


Knowledge Evidence

A person competent in this unit must be able to demonstrate knowledge of:

environmental protection practices for maintaining and repairing cauls and screens:

reducing water and energy use

cleaning plant, tools and equipment

disposing of, recycling and reusing defective materials

disposing of hazardous substances

operational purpose and features of caul plates, screens and transport plates

purpose, features and operation of tools and equipment used to maintain and repair caul plates and screens:

chemical baths

heat treatment baths

polishing table and machinery

methods used to remove and replace caul and transport plates

typical defects and methods used to assess condition of caul plates, screens and transport plates:

buckling

buildup of board product

marking of plates

dents

characteristics of metal used in caul plates and screens and how they respond to chemical and heat cleaning processes and polishing in the case of caul plates

polishing techniques to ensure caul plate surfaces are smooth for optimum board separation

methods used to safely handle and store chemicals used in the cleaning process

organisational procedures specific to maintaining and repairing caul plates and screens:

workplace health and safety with particular emphasis on equipment lock out, use of personal protective equipment and handling hazardous substances

communication reporting lines

recording and reporting process outcomes and equipment faults.
