Elements and Performance Criteria

1. Prepare for maintenance
   • Review work order and where required check with appropriate personnel.
   • Select appropriate repair, maintenance and personal protective equipment and check for operational effectiveness.
   • Remove caul plates and screens for maintenance from designated machinery.
   • Plan maintenance process in line with work order.
2. Change, clean and polish caul plates
   • Follow organisational safety procedures and manufacturer’s recommendations throughout all maintenance and repair processes.
   • Identify plates requiring cleaning and move from circuit to plate rack.
   • Process plates through full cleaning cycle; inspect for defects and separate for repair where required.
   • Dry plates, prepare for use and return to circuit.
   • Polish plates using polishing table and head.
   • Store polished plates for use in line with work order.
   • Store or dispose of unused chemicals in line with environmental protection practices.
3. Prepare backing screens
   • Roll screens from plate and secure.
   • Process screens through full cleaning cycle; stack and inspect for faults.
   • Identify defective screens, remove and dispose of these in line with environmental protection practices.
4. Remove and replace transport plates
   • Coordinate load shifting and transport requirements to remove and replace transport plates with minimal downtime.
   • Identify defective plates, remove from circuit and dispose of these in line with environmental protection practices.
   • Prepare and fit replacement plates.
   • Record and report process outcomes and equipment faults to appropriate personnel.

Performance Evidence

A person demonstrating competency in this unit must satisfy all of the elements, performance criteria and foundation skills of this unit. If a specific volume or frequency is not stated below, then evidence must be provided that the following requirements have been performed on at least one occasion:

complete maintenance jobs in line with individual work orders

for each of the above jobs complete the following maintenance and repair activities:

process caul plates and screens through the full cleaning cycle which may be via chemical or heat treatment baths

polish caul plates to ensure optimum operation

inspect caul plates, screen and transport plates for defects and process for repair or dispose of.

characteristics of metal used in caul plates and screens and how they respond to chemical and heat cleaning processes and polishing in the case of caul plates

polishing techniques to ensure caul plate surfaces are smooth for optimum board separation

methods used to safely handle and store chemicals used in the cleaning process

organisational procedures specific to maintaining and repairing caul plates and screens:

workplace health and safety with particular emphasis on equipment lock out, use of personal protective equipment and handling hazardous substances

communication reporting lines

recording and reporting process outcomes and equipment faults.
