Performance Evidence

A person demonstrating competency in this unit must satisfy all of the elements, performance criteria and foundation skills of this unit. If a specific volume or frequency is not stated below, then evidence must be provided that the following requirements have been performed on at least one occasion:

complete paper treatment processing in line with individual work orders for each job which prescribe different paper thicknesses and quantities

for each of the above jobs, direct treated paper to appropriate storage location or to downstream processing

after each of the above jobs, complete operator maintenance on paper treatment equipment used

complete refill of resin tanks

demonstrate cleaning process for effluent tanks.


Knowledge Evidence

A person competent in this unit must be able to demonstrate knowledge of:

environmental protection practices for paper treatment processes:

reducing water and energy use

cleaning plant, tools and equipment

cleaning spillages and disposing of hazardous substances

purpose of treating paper

characteristics of paper, effects of the treatment process and appropriate range of temperatures

properties, at a basic level of understanding, of resin types used to treat paper

methods used to assess condition of paper for finish quality and faults

typical work flow processes and paper treatment techniques

typical flow of material supply in and out of the paper treatment area

purpose, features and operation of equipment used in the paper treatment process:

treaters

vats

ovens

resin tanks

effluent tanks

methods used to:

safely handle chemicals used in the treatment process

pump deliveries of resin

clean effluent tanks

maintain paper treatment equipment

organisational procedures specific to treating paper:

workplace health and safety with particular emphasis on equipment lock out, use of personal protective equipment and handling hazardous substances

communication reporting lines

recording and reporting deliveries, process outcomes, equipment faults and maintenance requirements.
