Elements and Performance Criteria

  1. Prepare for pressing
  2. Press material
  3. Unload material
  4. Shut down and clean equipment

Performance Evidence

A person demonstrating competency in this unit must satisfy all of the elements, performance criteria and foundation skills of this unit. If a specific volume or frequency is not stated below, then evidence must be provided that the following requirements have been performed on at least one occasion:

compress material using the daylight process in line with individual work orders that prescribe different quantities; types of materials for compression include:

chips

fibre

flakes

assess formed material for moisture content, weight, thickness, density and defects and adjust forming cycle times, pressures and temperatures to produce quality outputs

after each of the above jobs, complete operator maintenance to clean equipment.

Knowledge Evidence

A person competent in this unit must be able to demonstrate knowledge of:

environmental protection practices for forest products factory settings:

reducing water and energy use

cleaning plant, tools and equipment

disposing of, recycling and reusing timber and other waste

typical flow of material supply in and out of the pressing area

typical work flow processes and processing techniques used to compress material using formers and a heat driven press system

purpose, features and operation of equipment used to press material using the daylight process:

daylight process presses driven by steam pressure, including pneumatic or hydraulic loading and unloading equipment

pre-presses

formers

forming equipment:

mats

screens

trays

plates

press bars or stops

cooling receivers

blending equipment

trimming equipment

appropriate cycle times, pressures and temperatures for the materials that can be compressed:

chips

fibre

flakes

methods used to assess formed material for moisture content, weight, thickness, density and defects

features of typical defects in formed materials:

surface blemishes

discolouration

natural timber defects

forming deformities

methods used to strip and clean equipment

organisational procedures specific to pressing material using the daylight process:

workplace health and safety with particular emphasis on equipment lock out and use of personal protective equipment

communication reporting lines

recording and reporting production outcomes and equipment faults.
