Elements and Performance Criteria

  1. Prepare for trimming
  2. Trim panels to size
  3. Complete operator maintenance

Performance Evidence

A person demonstrating competency in this unit must satisfy all of the elements, performance criteria and foundation skills of this unit. If a specific volume or frequency is not stated below, then evidence must be provided that the following requirements have been performed on at least one occasion:

produce trimmed panels in line with individual work orders prescribing different lengths and tolerances and number of panels; types of panels includes:

medium density fibreboard

laminated veneer

chipboard

fibreboard

plywood

continuous ply

across the above jobs, complete cutting patterns and sequences for single straight cuts and angles requiring one cutting pass set for multiple cuts of the same size

for each of the above jobs, stack batches of cut panels in storage location according to common length

after each of the above jobs, complete operator maintenance on the saw used.

Knowledge Evidence

A person competent in this unit must be able to demonstrate knowledge of:

environmental protection practices for forest products factory settings:

reducing water and energy use

cleaning of plant, tools and equipment

disposing of, recycling and reusing timber and other waste

typical timber panel defects and how they affect ability to produce quality trimmed panels:

warp

wane

cupping

shakes

insect defects

knots

resin pockets

cutting patterns and sequences for single straight cuts and angles requiring one cutting pass

range of industry standard lengths, cross sections and tolerances and applicable terminology

typical flow of material supply in and out of the trimming area

storage layout and categories for stacking finished panels

purpose, features and operation of equipment used to trim new panels to size:

automated trimming saws

conveyor belt systems

methods for assessing saw blade condition and completing and basic non-specialist repair and maintenance for saws

organisational procedures specific to trimming new panels to size:

workplace health and safety with particular emphasis on equipment lock out and use of personal protective equipment

communication reporting lines

recording and reporting production outcomes, equipment faults and maintenance requirements.
