Elements and Performance Criteria

1. Plan panel production.
   • Review panel production schedule and confirm requirements with relevant personnel.
   • Identify and follow safe work procedure for planning and coordinating panel production.
   • Identify hazards and control risk in the work area, relevant to own role and responsibility.
   • Inspect panel characteristics and record and report variations to operators.
   • Plan, schedule and communicate panel type, sizes and production methods to operators.
   • Maintain communication with operators as required, to ensure safety and production requirements are met.
2. Monitor panel production outcomes and record information.
   • Monitor panel production for effective forming, laminating or veneering outcomes and panel condition.
   • Assist operators to evaluate panels, identify faults and rectify production problems.
   • Develop processes for rejecting and disposing of sub-standard panels produced in line with site procedures and environmental requirements.
   • Monitor panel production and output management and record possible process improvements.
3. Coordinate panel production and record information.
   • Modify production methods or schedules as required, to ensure optimum performance.
   • Communicate to operators and record production improvement modifications in line with site procedures.
   • Direct produced panels to storage or transfer for further processing.
   • Record and report panel production data, output data, quality data and equipment faults in line with record keeping procedure and site requirements.

Performance Evidence

A person demonstrating competency in this unit must satisfy all of the elements, performance criteria and foundation skills of this unit. If a specific volume or frequency is not stated below, then evidence must be provided that the following requirements have been performed on at least one occasion:

safely and efficiently plan and coordinate panel production in line with safe work procedure and workplace requirements

monitor panel production outcomes and identify and rectify production and equipment problems and faults

record and report workplace information: production, output, quality, faults

modify production methods and schedules for panel production

communicate effectively and coordinate personnel to follow planning, communications and scheduling for panel production.

safe work procedures, site procedures, policies and site standards relevant to planning and coordinating panel production

environmental protection requirements, including the safe disposal of waste material

hazards and risks associated with the panel production process and risk control strategies

panel types: laminated, veneered, plywood, chipboard, fibreboard, medium density fibreboard

panel characteristics: panel type, size, surface treatment, thickness, grade

production methods: board forming, pressing board using daylight process, board laminating, pressing laminated ply, applying laminates or veneers

established communication channels and protocols used to communicate with relevant operators

problem identification and resolution strategies and common fault finding techniques

procedures for recording and reporting production, quality and fault information.
