Elements and Performance Criteria

2. Select and prepare materials
   • Read and interpret the work order
   • Select appropriate material for the base
   • Select appropriate material for the rim
   • Prepare model to enable appropriate application of selected base material
3. Construct base
   • Apply selected base material to model
   • Process base material according to type of material selected
   • Trim base material to peripheral contours of model and appropriate landmarks
4. Construct registration rim
   • Construct rim to industry standard in selected material
   • Trim rim to prescribed dimensions and appropriate landmarks
   • Smooth and polish rim according to material chosen
   • Decontaminate the registration rim according to infection control guidelines
   • Dry the registration rim and place in a sealed container for dispatch

Performance Evidence

The candidate must show evidence of the ability to complete tasks outlined in elements and performance criteria of this unit, manage tasks and manage contingencies in the context of the job role. There must be evidence that the candidate has:

• read and correctly interpreted 4 work orders

• used standard precautions and safe work practices to fabricate maxillary and mandibular registration rims using a range of flexible and rigid base and rim material for the following dentitions (4 rims in total):

- partial with a combination of bounded and unbounded saddle areas

- edentulous

• critically evaluated the 4 registration rims produced to meet technical laboratory and clinician requirements.

Knowledge Evidence

The candidate must be able to demonstrate essential knowledge required to effectively complete tasks outlined in elements and performance criteria of this unit, manage tasks and manage contingencies in the context of the work role. This includes knowledge of:

• Australian/New Zealand Standards, workplace health and safety (WHS) policies, Dental Board of Australia guidelines on infection control, Commonwealth and State/Territory legislation and organisation policies relating to dental laboratory work

• fundamental oral anatomy including:

- dentition – arrangement of the teeth, naming and coding of teeth

- structures of the oral cavity – hard and soft palate, lateral and posterior borders of the oral cavity, tongue and floor of the mouth

- teeth form and function

• properties of materials used to construct registration rims, including rigid and flexible bases.
