Elements and Performance Criteria

Performance Evidence

The candidate must show evidence of the ability to complete tasks outlined in elements and performance criteria of this unit, manage tasks and manage contingencies in the context of the job role. There must be evidence that the candidate has:

undertaken work in accordance with Nursing and Midwifery Board of Australia professional practice standards, codes and guidelines

worked as part of the multidisciplinary health care team within scope of practice in the Australian rural and remote workplace setting for at least 3 of each of the following situations:

emergency situations involving stabilisation and transport

non-emergency situations

responded to the required clinical interventions for 3 people to treat and manage the person’s condition, illness or injury as authorised by medical practitioner via communication modes such as phone, video or radio

conducted 1 activity in workplace with the multidisciplinary health care team that supports improved outcomes of nursing practice in rural and remote contexts

conducted 1 health education session to engage the community in development and ownership of health programs that meet locally specific health needs.


Knowledge Evidence

The candidate must be able to demonstrate essential knowledge required to effectively complete tasks outlined in elements and performance criteria of this unit, manage tasks and manage contingencies in the context of the work role. This includes knowledge of:

changing demands for services in rural and remote communities in Australia and National E-Health Strategy

current economic, political and socio-economic factors impacting rural and remote health care including:

funding arrangements including federal, State/ Territories and local government that impact availability of health services and health programs

expansion of scope of practice for nurses

shortage in health workforce

ageing population

prevalence of chronic disease

social disadvantage

organisations in rural and remote areas and models of healthcare provided including:

Consumer Directed Care (CDC)

mobile health service

Person-Centred Care (PCC)

Primary Health Care (PHC)

tertiary level care (community or regional hospital)

nursing practice models used in rural and remote contexts:

team nursing or ‘shared care’ approach

total patient care or patient focused care

quality-caring model (used in acute care)

process engagement or community health nursing (used in chronic disease management)

assessment tools, techniques, procedures and nursing guidelines used in rural and remote contexts

remote considerations in the provision of nursing care including:

how and when to access emergency response services

communication systems, equipment and methods available in remote situations

emergency situations and the ways in which the care approach may be adjusted in the rural and remote context

non-emergency situations and the ways in which the care approach may be adjusted in the rural and remote context

emerging health technologies, their features and how they are used and accessed:

Telehealth services

mobile health services with specialised diagnostic equipment

hospital in the home services

types of participants in a rural and remote multidisciplinary health care team and their roles:

Aboriginal health practitioner

community care worker

health care assistants

medical practitioners

nurse practitioners

pharmacists

physiotherapists and occupational therapist

registered nurses and registered midwives

social workers

options for transport may include emergency services using road, air or water

sources of information on best practice nursing in rural and remote settings

organisational processes and how they may be adapted and used in rural and remote context such as:

risk identification

and risk management processes

community-based health services, public health services, social health care programs and health promotion programs

community health education – health promotion activities, social media content and interactions, health information literature

local and community culture including culturally appropriate health promotion activities.
