Elements and Performance Criteria

1. Maintain operation of reel transportation system on web-fed machine
   • Reel stand is monitored and adjusted to ensure efficient continuous operation
   • Web control system is monitored and adjusted to ensure correct tension and accurate continuous positioning of the web for efficient operation
   • Substrate is added to the process according to job specifications
2. Maintain operation of reel delivery system on web-fed machine
   • Reel rewind section is monitored and adjusted to maintain correct tension and to ensure no marks, blemishes or damage to finished product
   • Substrate is removed from the process according to job specifications
   • Sheeting section is monitored and adjusted to ensure quality and efficient product delivery
3. Maintain complex laminating process
   • Registration of laminating is monitored and adjusted to ensure product quality meets the approved sample standard
   • Pressures are monitored and adjusted to ensure product quality meets the approved sample standard
   • Adhesion is monitored and adjusted to ensure product quality meets the approved sample standard
4. Maintain production processes
   • In-line printing/coating/converting/binding/finishing process(es) are monitored and adjusted to ensure product quality meets the approved sample standard
   • Production process is operated in association with fellow workers and according to enterprise procedures and planned daily schedule
   • Production is maintained according to work health and safety (WHS) requirements, manufacturer’s specifications and enterprise procedures
   • Manual and/or automatic control is used according to job specifications
   • Performance is monitored and verified using the process control system according to enterprise procedures
   • Production difficulties are anticipated and preventive action is taken to prevent occurrence by timely intervention
   • Process adjustments to eliminate problems are reported according to enterprise procedures
   • Faulty performance of equipment is identified and reported according to enterprise procedures
   • Waste is sorted according to enterprise procedures
5. Identify and rectify machine operating problem
   • Problems in laminating machine are identified and reported according to enterprise procedures
   • Adjustments or corrections are carried out according to specified procedures, and are consistent with operator’s skill level
   • Laminating machine operation is checked to ensure correct operation
6. Conduct shutdown of production process
   • Correct shutdown sequence is followed according to manufacturer’s specifications and enterprise procedures
   • Shutdown is conducted in association with fellow workers and in compliance with WHS requirements
   • Substrate waste is removed from operating area and recycled or disposed of, where required, according to regulatory requirements and enterprise procedures
   • Machine faults requiring repair are identified and reported to designated person according to enterprise procedures
   • Repair/adjustment is verified prior to resumption of operations
7. Clean laminating machine at end of run
   • Laminating machine is disengaged and cleaned ready for next run
   • Adhesive system is washed ready for next run and liquid waste is disposed of according to regulatory requirements and enterprise procedures
   • In-line printing/coating/converting/binding/finishing units are cleaned ready for next run
   • Reel feed, transportation and delivery systems are disengaged and cleaned ready for next run
   • Production records or other documentation are accurately completed where required by enterprise procedures

Performance Evidence

Evidence of the ability to:

correctly produce a complex laminated product using any TWO of moisture, chemical and extrusion laminating processes. For each process, operate a laminating machine (2 or more ply) to complete TWO jobs on different substrates and of different sizes (large/small formats including one in-line process), while demonstrating splicing techniques in minimum time according to manufacturer’s and job specifications, enterprise procedures and listed performance criteria (at least one machine used must be fully automated).

Note: If a specific volume or frequency is not stated, then evidence must be provided at least once.

To complete the unit requirements safely and effectively, the individual must:

shutting down and cleaning the machine

machine that need regular cleaning

explain the process for correct and continuous feeding and delivery of substrate

list checks to make when substrate is removed from the machine

determine ways:

registration of laminating is assured

adjustment of the machine is achieved

pressure can be adjusted during production

determine areas of production to monitor to ensure trouble-free operation

identify laminating problems that may occur during operation of the machine

explain adjustments or correction procedures to ensure accurate operation of the process and to meet client requirements

list checks to make when correctly shutting down the machine

identify materials to clean from the machine

explain requirements to keep the machine clear of surface rust (condensation)

list recommended cleaning agents, and materials to be cleaned from the machine

identify production records to be kept or written up, and the information to include

determine quality aspects to consider in a completed laminated job
