Elements and Performance Criteria

  1. Confirm job specifications
  2. Set up machine
  3. Set up delivery systems
  4. Select foils
  5. Conduct proof run

Range Statement

This section specifies different work environments and conditions that may affect performance. Essential operating conditions that may be present (depending on the work situation, needs of the candidate, accessibility of the item, and local industry and regional contexts) are included.

Delivery systems MUST include Either:

reel

OR

sheet

OR

product jigs

Setting up and adjusting MUST include EITHER:

unwind and rewind reels

webbing procedures

splicing/joining reels

printed web viewing devices

folder and sheeter

set off / marking prevention devices

OR

feeder and delivery systems

sheet pick-up and transportation system

transfer and control system

set off / marking prevention devices

OR

selecting jigs to suit product

fitting jigs to machine table

adjusting table height to suit product

Performance Evidence

Evidence of the ability to:

safely set up a dye or block and the reel or sheet systems or jigs for gold blocking or hot foil stamping and conduct a proof run and adjust settings to ensure production speeds are attained

demonstrate the use of control, monitoring and data entry systems

find and use information relevant to the task from a variety of information sources

demonstrate all safety devices on the machine

correctly set up for foil stamping on TWO occasions (if possible including at least one in-line process if relevant) according to manufacturer’s and job specifications and enterprise procedures.

Note: If a specific volume or frequency is not stated, then evidence must be provided at least once.

Knowledge Evidence

To complete the unit requirements safely and effectively, the individual must:

Interpreting job specifications

explain actions undertaken if vital information is missing from the job ticket

list checks undertaken prior to set up (availability of materials etc.)

Web systems only

describe purpose of nip rollers

outline how sheet position is determined for the job

discuss why the same side lay is used in both print and foil stamping

identify how appropriate front lays are selected

Sheet or product delivery system (as relevant)

list major work health and safety (WHS) concerns of setting up delivery systems

explain how to determine the printing side of material

explain how high side and front lays should be set

explain why a register check should be carried out

identify how to determine appropriate product jigs

explain how to determine correct table height

outline characteristics to consider when selecting foil for foil stamped product

identify type of foil required for foiling on plastic films

list THREE products and the foils appropriate for them

list WHS concerns related to set up

describe effect of soft packing on the foil stamped product

identify methods to create harder packing

explain the effect higher dwell time has on the foil stamped product

identify the temperature that is the starting point when setting up

explain implications if the temperature is set too high

discuss the height dye should be mounted at

explain how required pressure is determined

identify precautions to protect from burns

explain why not to use the first sheet or object printed as a proof during set up

discuss what causes an uneven print (top to bottom)

discuss how long it takes for temperature adjustments to come into effect

identify signs a temperature setting is too high

explain how much the foil should draw through the press on each pass

identify machine manuals, safety and other documentation relevant to this task, where are they kept and the information contained.
