Elements and Performance Criteria

1. Select and prepare chemicals
   • Ink and stencil type are correctly identified and screen is assessed for suitability to be reclaimed
   • Most appropriate reclamation method is selected
   • Screen reclamation chemicals are selected and prepared according to manufacturer or supplier specifications
   • Appropriate safety gear is selected and worn according to manufacturer or supplier specifications and work health and safety (WHS) requirements
2. Wash screen
   • Stencil is treated with appropriate chemical to manufacturer specifications
   • Screens are washed using pressure gun in suitably ventilated area with required extraction system
   • Stains and hazards are removed using appropriate chemicals according to manufacturer or supplier specifications and WHS requirements
   • Screens are checked for damage and any defects are reported and/or rectified according to enterprise procedures
3. Store screen
   • Screens are correctly identified and labelled
   • Screens are stored in clean, dry environment according to manufacturer or supplier specifications

Performance Evidence

Evidence of the ability to:

safely reclaim THREE screens, preferably of different mesh and stencil types commonly used in the workplace, using manual techniques, according to manufacturer and job specifications, enterprise procedures and work health and safety (WHS) requirements.

Note: If a specific volume or frequency is not stated, then evidence must be provided at least once.

Knowledge Evidence

To complete the unit requirements safely and effectively, the individual must:

explain the significance of mesh count

explain how screens with different mesh counts should be treated

describe the common faults that could occur in meshes and frames

describe the ink removal procedures for three different inks

describe the stencil removal procedures for two stencil types

identify what chemicals are available for screen reclamation

explain the reasons for selecting chemicals and method for screen reclamation

explain the main considerations when handling and disposing of chemicals

explain the various screen reclamation techniques available in the industry

explain the reasons for selecting and applying a specific technique for screen reclamation

identify the hazards to be aware of in reclaiming screens

describe the enterprise policies on material handling

describe the enterprise policies on management of waste

name any personal protective clothing that should be worn when reclaiming screens

identify required manuals, safety and other documentation and briefly outline the relevant information in each source.
