Elements and Performance Criteria

1. Assess solid waste
   • Reusable waste is sorted from recyclable waste according to enterprise procedures
   • Waste is weighed, and weight and source of waste recorded
2. Prepare solid waste for removal from site
   • Waste is shredded according to enterprise procedures, storage and delivery specifications
   • Waste is baled as appropriate for waste destination, delivery method and method of transportation according to enterprise procedures
3. Dispatch solid waste
   • Waste is stacked/packed on/in appropriate storage/shipping containers prior to dispatch
   • Waste is dispatched via appropriate delivery mode according to enterprise procedures and job specifications
   • Waste is dispatched at pre-determined rate to prevent accumulation of waste around machines
   • Documentation associated with tasks is accurately completed according to enterprise procedures
4. Carry out minor routine maintenance and cleaning of waste packaging machines
   • Shredder is cleaned, checked and lubricated according to manufacturer’s specifications and enterprise standard operating procedures
   • Baler is cleaned, checked and lubricated according to manufacturer’s specifications and enterprise standard operating procedures

Performance Evidence

Evidence of the ability to:

correctly pack and dispatch solid waste

assess, prepare and dispatch TWO lots of solid waste, and maintain and clean waste packaging machines according to job and workplace specifications.

Note: If a specific volume or frequency is not stated, then evidence must be provided at least once.

Knowledge Evidence

To complete the unit requirements safely and effectively, the individual must:

Sorting solid waste

differentiate between reusable and recyclable waste, and provide an example of each

describe how reusable waste is stored and used

identify weight limitations of each batch of solid waste

Processing solid waste

explain work health and safety (WHS) requirements when operating the shredding machine

describe capabilities of the shredding machine

explain how to determine the appropriate baling method

Dispatch and documentation

outline the appropriate method for storing solid waste prior to dispatching

describe problems caused by accumulation of waste around machines

list details recorded when dispatching solid waste

describe where details for dispatching are obtained

Maintaining waste packaging machines

identify WHS concerns related to cleaning and maintaining shredding and baling machines

describe how often these machines should be cleaned and lubricated
