Elements and Performance Criteria

1. Assess manual handling risks
   • Identify manual handling hazards in work area
   • Assess risks arising from those hazards
2. Analyse physical effort requirements of job
   • Determine basic manual handling requirements of job
   • Analyse requirements in terms of components such as lift, move, place and hold
   • Analyse items to be handled in terms of weight, size, shape or other hazards
3. Determine time/effort components of physical effort
   • Break required movement pattern down into movement components
   • Determine time and effort requirements of movements
   • Develop alternative movement patterns
   • Determine time and effort requirements of alternative movements
   • Determine handling aids required to assist movement
   • Determine preferred movement pattern(s)
4. Analyse ergonomics of physical effort
   • Analyse ergonomics of the preferred movement pattern
   • Develop substitute movements for any movement which is ergonomically unsound
   • Determine handling aids required to improve ergonomics of required movements
5. Optimise application of physical effort
   • Select movement patterns which are ergonomically sound and time and effort efficient
   • Train all relevant people to use these methods
   • Ensure procedures and practices reflect optimum methods

Performance Evidence

Evidence of the ability to:

examine the manual handling components of a job and:

identify the associated hazards

assess the risks

determine the time, effort and ergonomic requirements of the current range of movements

determine aids or alternative movements that would improve the physical effort

implement and document identified improvements.

Note: If a specific volume or frequency is not stated, then evidence must be provided at least once.

To complete the unit requirements safely and effectively, the individual must:

outline principles of efficient movement

outline principles of efficient job and work method design

explain principles of work analysis

outline principles of ergonomics
