Elements and Performance Criteria
- Prepare for safe underground cable hauling
- Prepare for given work according to relevant legislation, codes, regulations and standards
- Arrange access to site according to required procedure
- Inform appropriate personnel of identified hazards on worksite
- Confirm hauling location of proposed cable according to appropriate plan specifications obtained from authorised personnel
- Obtain information on proposed locations of other services from relevant authorities
- Set up tools and equipment required for safe work practice according to enterprise guidelines
- Check for dangerous gases and place guards around open manholes following work health and safety (WHS) and environmental requirements
- Haul cable
- Handle existing cables in manner that avoids cable damage
- Use roping techniques to prove that conduit is clear for hauling
- Attach cable to rope and haul cable into and out of pits and manholes, ensuring no sheath damage
- Lubricate cable and haul at correct tension, maintaining smooth passage between dispenser and hauler
- Maintain cable and services separations in parallel runs and crossovers to meet manufacturer’s and regulation requirements
- Maintain sufficient cable length allowance for jointing and ensure cable is laid up and bent within bending radius tolerance for cable materials in underground enclosure
- Seal cables according to enterprise requirements to ensure no sheath damage
- Tag cable for future identification
- Complete works on site
- Record any approved alteration to original design using correct symbols and return to appropriate personnel
- Complete and sign reports, where required, according to enterprise policy
- Reinstate site to client’s satisfaction and dispose of wastes in environmentally safe manner
- Notify appropriate personnel and obtain sign off
