Elements and Performance Criteria

1. Prepare for customer premises systems and equipment installation
   • Prepare for given work according to relevant legislation, codes, regulations and standards
   • Arrange access to site according to required procedure
   • Inform appropriate personnel of existing and potential hazards on worksite
   • Verify location of proposed customer communications equipment installation according to plans obtained from authorised personnel
   • Develop installation plans to ensure minimal disruption to workplace and according to standards
   • Select suitable tools and equipment
2. Install system hardware
   • Install network equipment following work health and safety (WHS) and environmental requirements according to manufacturer’s instructions
   • Confirm service interruption is within limits agreed with customer
   • Complete cable jumpering to distribution infrastructure and terminal equipment to specification
   • Document all installation drawings for customer
3. Configure and test system
   • Install software and, if required, configure system according to specifications
   • Test to verify system performance according to customer requirements
   • Record all test results
4. Clean up worksite and compete documentation
   • Remove and dispose of installation waste and debris from worksite according to environmental requirements
   • Restore worksite to customer’s satisfaction
   • Complete all installation documents and present to customer
   • Notify customer and obtain signoff

Performance Evidence

Evidence of the ability to:

read and interpret:

related floor plans

building plans

reflected ceiling plans

schematic drawings

install customer premises equipment

configure and test systems and equipment

apply relevant regulations and standards

comply with all related health and safety requirements and work practices.

Note: If a specific volume or frequency is not stated, then evidence must be provided at least once.

Knowledge Evidence

To complete the unit requirements safely and effectively, the individual must:

identify and select cabling types, connectors and cabling structures

describe the connections to carrier infrastructure or equipment, such as main distribution frame (MDF) or asymmetric digital subscriber line (ADSL), multiplexer (MUX), integrated services digital network (ISDN), network termination device (NTD) or other carrier interface unit

recognise electrical and/or optical properties to be measured

explain the health and safety considerations for the works including:

electrical safety

lifting hazards

manufacturer’s requirements for safe operation of equipment

describe the equipment to be installed on the customer's premises

identify and select the test methods and performance requirements for the installation

identify typical issues and challenges that occur on the worksite.
