Elements and Performance Criteria

1. Determine context of the business need or problem
   • Develop the database objectives and identify the expected outcomes to be achieved
   • Document the database problem
2. Gather information
   • Analyse the database in order to identify the business rules, entities and relationships
   • Identify the existing and proposed business models
   • Identify any possible Big Data applications
3. Determine the database functionality
   • Document the existing database and the environment
   • Confirm database functionality with the client
4. Identify scalability and functionality
   • Identify the reserve, and long-term capacity, of the database
   • Identify the implications for the system’s architecture, data models, data structures, hardware and software
   • Identify the requirements for scalability
   • Compare the functionality and scalability features of the database
   • Determine and document any gap between the features
5. Prepare the database functionality and scalability report
   • Document the functionality and scalability of the database
   • Submit the report to the client for review

Performance Evidence

Evidence of the ability to:

document a clear statement of business expectations and needs, including critical business requirements

examine the scalability, and functionality, of a database in light of future growth

determine database functionality and scalability system requirements

present the findings in a report to the client.

Note: If a specific volume or frequency is not stated, then evidence must be provided at least once.

Knowledge Evidence

To complete the unit requirements safely and effectively, the individual must:

explain the architecture of the network in which the database resides

identify and explain, the code of ethics relevant to the computing industry in Australia

identify the common system hardware related to the client, server and database architecture

explain the concept of data modelling

outline the functions and features of databases

define "Big Data", and explain its implication for database design and functionality.
