Elements and Performance Criteria

1. Analyse client needs
   • Assess the client requirements
   • Assess the existing client or server systems that may be suitable to be virtualised
2. Analyse the virtualisation host software
   • Assess and compare suitable virtualisation host software, according to the enterprise requirements
   • Document the recommendations and provide these to the appropriate person
3. Evaluate the system requirements
   • Obtain and document the technical specifications, licensing and system requirements from the virtualisation software vendors
   • Evaluate, and compare, the system requirements needed to implement virtualisation
   • Document the recommendations and provide to the appropriate person
4. Plan and install the virtualisation host software
   • Plan and prepare, for the host software installation
   • Obtain and install the virtualisation host platform
   • Test and validate the functionality of the virtualisation host platform, according to the enterprise requirements

Performance Evidence

Evidence of the ability to:

identify and apply, the suitable tools and software applications required to manage virtual machines

configure the software applications to manage virtual machines

integrate the virtual machines into the existing network design

test and validate the virtualisation.

Note: If a specific volume or frequency is not stated, then evidence must be provided at least once.

Knowledge Evidence

To complete the unit requirements safely and effectively, the individual must:

determine current government and industry policies, and guidelines, relating to the development of efficient and reliable, information and communications technology (ICT) environments

analyse the current technologies, and processes, designed to produce an efficient and reliable ICT environment

research the current recommendations on sustainability options in ICT design

discuss the benefits of virtualisation

identify and apply, the processes and procedures for installing and configuring virtualisation software and virtual machines

identify and apply, the processes and procedures for configuring virtual machines into network design

determine the structure, functions and business organisation of the client

identify and apply, the available tools and software applications required to manage virtual machines

research the configuration of software applications required to manage virtual machines

research the configuration required to integrate virtual machines into existing network design.
