Elements and Performance Criteria

1. Plan and prepare for work
   • Maintenance and repair activities are identified from work orders and clarified with appropriate personnel
   • Relevant plans, drawings and texts are interpreted to determine job specifications
   • Resources required to complete tasks are identified, obtained and inspected for compliance with job specifications
   • Where work at heights or overside is required, appropriate fall arrest and restraint devices are selected and used according to work health and safety (WHS)/occupational health and safety (OHS) requirements
   • Tasks are sequenced and prioritised
   • Coordination requirements are resolved with others involved or affected by the work
   • Potential hazards are identified and prevention and/or control measures are selected according to work plan and organisational procedures
2. Perform basic deck maintenance
   • Suitable personal protective clothing is selected and used according to WHS/OHS requirements
   • Deck surfaces are checked according to planned maintenance system
   • Any deterioration or corrosion of vessel deck surfaces is identified and appropriate maintenance action is carried out according to manufacturer instructions and organisational procedures
   • Minor faults and imperfections in paint surfaces are repaired according to manufacturer instructions and organisational procedures
   • Weathered surfaces are restored using cleaners and liquid abrasives according to manufacturer instructions and organisational procedures
   • Tools and equipment are used correctly and safely
   • Maintenance materials are obtained, prepared and applied according to manufacturer instructions and organisational procedures
3. Carry out cleaning tasks
   • Suitable personal protective clothing is selected and used according to WHS/OHS requirements
   • Area to be cleaned is prepared and any hazards identified
   • Work area is barricaded or warning signs provided, as appropriate, to reduce risk to other crew members
   • Correct chemicals and cleaning agents are selected and applied according to manufacturer instructions and WHS/OHS requirements
   • Equipment is used correctly and safely
   • Cleaning tasks are completed according to manufacturer instructions and organisational procedures
4. Prepare and paint surfaces
   • Suitable personal protective clothing is selected and used according to WHS/OHS requirements
   • Surfaces are prepared using correct equipment
   • Rust remover, rust converter and undercoats are applied according to manufacturer instructions
   • Paints are mixed in correct proportions according to manufacturer instructions
   • Paint is applied using appropriate application equipment
5. Carry out routine maintenance of deck fittings, equipment and systems
   • Fittings and equipment are inspected and inspection results are compared with manufacturer specification
   • Maintenance tasks are carried out to specification
   • Mechanical equipment and system components are checked with appropriate instruments
   • Faulty items or components are identified and an appropriate maintenance procedure is selected
   • Unserviceable equipment is tagged according to organisational procedures
6. Repair/replace faulty fittings and equipment
   • Fittings and equipment are safely isolated according to regulations and WHS/OHS requirements
   • Faulty fittings or equipment are removed using appropriate tools, equipment and procedures
   • Replaceable items are selected or serviceable items are repaired according to manufacturer specifications
   • Adjustments are made to fittings or equipment to comply with specifications
   • Operational check is carried out to ensure compliance with manufacturer specifications
   • Maintenance report is completed according to organisational procedures
7. Clean up
   • Work area is cleared and cleaned
   • Materials are disposed of or recycled according to legislative and organisational requirements
   • Tools and equipment are checked, maintained, and stored according to organisational procedures

Method of assessment	Practical assessment must occur in an appropriately simulated workplace environment andor appropriate range of situations in the workplace A range of assessment methods should be used to assess practical skills and knowledge The following examples are appropriate to this unit direct observation of the candidate performing routine maintenance and repairs on a vessel direct observation of the candidate applying relevant WHSOHS requirements and work practices
Guidance information for assessment	Holistic assessment with other units relevant to the industry sector workplace and job role is recommended In all cases where practical assessment is used it should be combined with targeted questioning to assess Required Knowledge Assessment processes and techniques must be appropriate to the language and literacy requirements of the work being performed and the capacity of the candidate
