Elements and Performance Criteria

1. Plan and prepare for work
   • Obtain permits, isolation plans and contact Dial Before You Dig.
   • Identify yourself to customers and ensure customers have been notified of works and potential supply interruptions.
   • Conduct risk assessment of worksite and work.
   • Determine work requirements from specifications or instructions.
   • Test hydrant to determine the work required and record results.
   • Organise traffic management personnel.
   • Check all relevant licences from all personnel.
   • Identify, check and prepare materials, equipment and resources required.
2. Conduct installation, maintenance and refurbishment
   • Implement isolations.
   • Implement controls in relation to safety, environment, and barricading the work site.
   • Excavate and select appropriate equipment.
   • Complete maintenance repairs.
3. Finalise work
   • Remove isolations.
   • Retest hydrant and record results.
   • Maintain and store tools as per workplace procedures and manufacturer specifications.
   • Restore the worksite and complete and submit workplace records.

Performance Evidence

Evidence required to demonstrate competence must satisfy all of the requirements of the elements and performance criteria. If not otherwise specified the candidate must demonstrate evidence of performance of the following on at least one occasion.

reading and interpreting plans and drawings, and relevant standards and instructions

using tools and specific water equipment including valve keys and standpipes

selecting Personal Protection Equipment

maintaining tools

communicating with customers

determining location, size, utilities and services from plans

applying excavation techniques including potholing and cable location

organising traffic management and concrete cutters

conducting risk assessments on site for safety, environmental factors

restoring work site

implementing isolations

operating valves

planning work

complying with water off notices, flow control and shut plans, and permits to work

charging and discharging water mains

Knowledge Evidence

Evidence required to demonstrate competence must satisfy all of the requirements of the elements and performance criteria. If not otherwise specified the depth of knowledge demonstrated must be appropriate to the job context of the candidate.
