Elements and Performance Criteria

1. Plan and prepare for work
   • Determine work requirements as outlined in standard operating procedures.
   • Identify and report potential risks to self, other employees, public and environment.
   • Select and check work site equipment, tools and safety materials as appropriate to meet task and safety specifications.
   • Select, fit and use personal protective equipment.
2. Monitor pretreatment processes
   • Carry out routine plant inspections.
   • Monitor processes to maintain parameters of operation.
   • Collect process samples and conduct standard tests.
   • Collect, record and report process data.
   • Identify and report process faults and operational condition of plant.
3. Operate pretreatment processes
   • Operate pre-treatment processes.
   • Carry out basic adjustments to enhance system performance.
   • Determine chemical dosing requirements
4. Complete documentation
   • Collect and record process data
   • Report observations outside defined parameters for further action.

Performance Evidence

Evidence required to demonstrate competence must satisfy all of the requirements of the elements and performance criteria. If not otherwise specified the candidate must demonstrate evidence of performance of the following on at least one occasion.

performing calculations including ratios

reading and applying procedures and standards

giving and receiving instructions

identifying control system faults and operational problems

using verbal and written communication in the workplace

monitoring, operating and reporting on wastewater pretreatment processes, including at least one of:

screening

gravity and aerated grit chambers

gross pollution traps

removal and disposal of screenings

shredding

odour removal

oily water separators

riffle plate separators

planning and preparing for work

collecting and labelling samples and performing tests including, at least one of:

settling tests

pH

dissolved oxygen

suspended solids

chemical oxygen demand

inspecting plant and monitoring processes

collecting and recording data

operating and adjusting processes, including at least one of:

pH correction

dissolved oxygen levels

flow control

screen rotation frequency

solids removal

chemical additions

plant performance data

chemical usage

recording all required information

Knowledge Evidence

Evidence required to demonstrate competence must satisfy all of the requirements of the elements and performance criteria. If not otherwise specified the depth of knowledge demonstrated must be appropriate to the job context of the candidate.
