Elements and Performance Criteria

1. Conduct unloading processes
   • Identify work requirements, in accordance with productivity requirements, relevant workplace health and safety (WHS) procedures, risks and hazards identification and environmental workplace procedures.
   • Check, set up and prepare load shifting equipment for operation.
   • Inspect load for movements and determine safest unloading sequence.
   • Lift materialsand unload while maintaining load and equipment stability.
   • Report damage to raw materials, equipment, or vehicle according to company procedures.
   • Monitor load or vehicle lifting equipment performance for unsatisfactory or hazardous operation.
2. Sort and store materials
   • Identify materials and assess for immediate use or storage.
   • Move materials to appropriate storage locations consistent with type, quality and stock rotation requirements.
   • Construct stacks to provide stability and minimise problems.
   • Make provision for decks, storage bays and access for lifting equipment when storing.
3. Record or tally unloading operations data
   • Confirm and record materials.
   • Mark storage areas, as required.
   • Maintain tally sheets and/or reject stock documentation, as required.

Performance Evidence

A person demonstrating competency in this unit must satisfy all of the elements, performance criteria and foundation skills of this unit, and must be able to provide evidence that they can:

safely unload, sort and store materials and products in a pulp or paper manufacturing facility, at least twice in line with required enterprise intervals

use safety accessories including protective and high visibility safety clothing when unloading materials at least twice in line with required enterprise intervals

identify and monitor process control points

use and interpret electronic control systems, to control equipment and processes when unloading

select appropriate actions for handling non-conformance loads

minimize handling to meet loading, processing, and stock rotation requirements

use approved manual handling techniques

operate and maintain materials handling equipment, including high risk load shifting equipment as required

record load documentation

communicate effectively, through written and verbal means, and using hand signals with others, in the work area when undertaking unloading of materials.

Knowledge Evidence

A person competent in this unit must be able to demonstrate knowledge of:

productivity requirements, relevant workplace health and safety (WHS) procedures, risks and hazards identification and environmental workplace procedures relevant to unloading materials, in a pulp or paper mill

materials unloading processes, area layout and associated services including operating parameters, variation and associated adjustments within level of responsibility

load types, specifications and characteristics

dangerous goods handling and storing requirements

responses to all unplanned shutdowns (power outage, mechanical breakdown, blockages, jamming, air supply, control system failure) to ensure safety quality and productivity

equipment fault identification and corrective action relevant to woodchip production

electronic and other control systems, operation and application to make appropriate adjustments, to control material unloading.
