Elements and Performance Criteria

  1. Undertake a health and safety site review
  2. Prepare Tier 1 equipment for use
  3. Operate and/or deploy Tier 1 equipment
  4. Check, clean and store Tier 1 equipment

Required Skills

This describes the essential skills and knowledge and their level required for this unit

Required Skills

ability to identify hazards

environmental

physical

chemical

take appropriate initiative relating to the handling and monitoring equipment

communicate effectively with others

modify activities dependent on workplace situations including risk and environment

read and interpret material safety data sheets

monitor equipment performance

complete maintenance checks and identify any required maintenance

work safely and collaboratively with others

recognise and address problems when dismantling inspecting and assembling equipment

work effectively within a team environment

safe loading and unloading of materials

Required Knowledge

OHS responsibilities

safe working procedures

operational characteristics of equipment

operation of equipment in accordance with SOPs

environmental impact of equipment

Evidence Required

Critical aspects for assessment and evidence required to demonstrate competency in this unit

Assessment must confirm the ability to

Work effectively in a team to safely deploy and monitor basic Tier equipment for the containment recovery and storage of oil

Context of and specific resources for assessment

Competency should be assessed in a simulated response environment or operational situation

Method of assessment

Assessment is completed using appropriately qualified assessors who select the most appropriate method of assessment

Assessment may occur in an operational environment or in an approved simulated environment

Forms of assessment may include

direct observation

journals and workplace documentation

third party reports from supervisors

written or oral questions

case studies

Guidance information for assessment

Where possible assessment should be completed holistically and may be assessed with other relevant units of competence For example this unit may be assessed with PUAOIL Use advanced equipment operations for oil spill response
