Elements and Performance Criteria

1. Identify operational processes, plant and equipment
   • Access, interpret and apply site policy and procedure documentation and ensure the work activity is compliant
   • Identify the links and effects on associated processes, outputs, plant and equipment
   • Identify the operating characteristics and limitations of processes and plant and equipment
   • Identify the process flow and interaction between processes and plant and equipment
   • Locate process routes and associated plant and equipment
   • Identify process control systems or centres and their function and location
   • Identify health and safety requirements and controls
   • Identify environmental requirements for site processes and plant and equipment
2. Monitor plant and equipment performance
   • Obtain, read and interpret the monitoring program and schedule
   • Confirm monitoring program and schedule with others
   • Interpret indicators, operations/shift reports, records and verbal information to identify faults/malfunctions in process or plant
   • Listen and visually inspect plant and equipment to identify operating problems/malfunctions
   • Monitor effectiveness of health and safety controls
   • Monitor effectiveness of environmental controls for processes, plant and equipment
3. Maintain plant and equipment performance
   • Make minor adjustments to plant and equipment controls, to maintain efficient operations
   • Rectify, or refer process, plant and equipment faults/malfunctions to relevant personnel for action
   • Identify major process, plant or equipment malfunctions and implement emergency shutdown procedures
   • Maintain effectiveness of health and safety controls
   • Maintain effectiveness of environmental controls for processes, plant and equipment
   • Report verbally and in writing problems/malfunctions and actions taken

Performance Evidence

Evidence is required to be collected that demonstrates a candidate’s competency in this unit. Evidence must be relevant to the roles within this sector’s work operations and satisfy all of the requirements of the performance criteria of this unit and include evidence that the candidate:

locates and applies relevant documentation, policies and procedures

demonstrates completion of identifying and rectifying site operating problems that safely, effectively and efficiently meets all of the required outcomes on more than one (1) occasion including:

monitoring plant and equipment performance according to monitoring programs

confirming and clarifying information from others to identify faults, problems or malfunctions which need rectifying

applying diagnostic and fault finding techniques when visually and physically inspecting plant and equipment

determining plant and equipment problems and malfunctions

adjusting plant and equipment to maintain optimum performance and function

identifying plant and equipment problems that require emergency shutdown procedures

rectifying problems within capability and reporting activity

reporting problems outside of capability and performing activities as instructed

reporting on problems and malfunctions

maintaining plant and equipment records

The candidate must demonstrate knowledge of identifying and rectifying site operating problems through:

relevant, organisation, site requirements and procedures

operational safety procedures

operator responsibilities

plant layouts

operational procedures related to processes, plant and equipment carried out by the operator

site communication procedures and systems

process, plant and equipment type purpose, application, characteristics and limitations

process, plant and equipment monitoring systems, programs and interpretation

plant and equipment maintenance systems and procedures

emergency shutdown procedures
